Author Topic: Finally got my Survivor (Read 1204 times)

Went up to the sporting goods store where I had my Survivor .308 on layaway yesterday morning, made my last payment and took her home

best part is, the store had just gotten some .308 ammo in Friday night, and I was the second customer yesterday, so I actually got some ammo to feed it.

My initial impression is that I really like this little gun. It balances well for me and fits my shoulder like it was made for me.

Trigger pull isn't as high as I had been led to expect. I don't have any way to measure it, but my guess is between 3 and 4lbs. I put a round through it, just to see how it handled, and was pleasantly surprised by the recoil. My .22 kicks less, but not much else. Plus, even without any sights, I managed to hit a 2ft piece of plywood at 50 yards. I picked up an ammo cuff for it and am getting a scope Monday. I'll post more pics and a range report when I can.

What's the white stuff on the ground? It was 74F here yesterday. I bet you will enjoy that rifle so much that you get more barrels for it.

Nice rifle. Not sure what your plans are for optics, but I have been having great luck with my BSA 4-16x40mm Mildot and with the 700+ yard capability of that rifle, might be a good choice for you.

Good spot for bullet drop charts is JBM, so if you make a range card, you'll know exactly how many mills to hold over for a given range.

Tell me, or do a pic if you can, what is the buttstock inside bottom like where the sling swivel goes?

The scope I am picking up is a TruGlo 4x32, because it's on sale for $70... 200 yards is a long shot around here, and I like to get within 100 yards of deer before shooting, so I don't need a whole lot of magnification. and I like that the eye relief is enough that the scope won't be sticking out over the hammer. I like JBM too.

Yes it was my friend and I was stuck inside most of the day.

I really like the looks of those survivor stocks, but I don't care for the feel.
I think if I was gonna get one though it would be in .308 like yours.

I think it is a case of it either fits you or it doesn't. For me, it is about the most natural feeling gun I have ever held(really looking forward to putting a shotgun barrel on it), but for my dad, who is about the same size/build as me, it feels awkward. I guess there are a bunch of little factors ad up to how a gun fits.

I'm glad you're content with the new rifle I hope you enjoy it.

The thing that turns me off on the survivor is the barrel length and bull barrel weight. To my way of thinking, the Survivor ought to be an 18 inch or less light weight .357 barrel at most (reamed to max of course). The 22 inch bull barrel just defeats the "Survivor" idea with the light weight plastic stock. It's too top heavy to sling properly and too long to pack easily. I'm thinking a 16 or 17 inch .22 Hornet or .223 Superlight would make a fine camping/survival gun on the survivor stock. Just my two cents.

Thanx for the stock pic, Vin; it looks like that is just a tab for the buttcap screw and then the bottom is that same thickness as the we see, then the swivel is screwed into it (or does it have a 'nut' inside?).
You do seem to have a lot of space to put gear and kit, that would help balance it out some, though I wouldnt want to put in anything 'fragile' or that I need to get to often; just 'survivor' stuff

I bought it as an all purpose hunter, rather than a survival gun, so the barrel and weight isn't as much of a sticking point, but if it were, I do agree with your assessment. Though if I were designing a "survival" setup, I would go with an iron sighted, 18", 20Ga or 12Ga barrel, again on the survivor stock, with a full length .22 Hornet insert.

The thing I just don't understand why they don't put iron-sights on them( or most of their other rifles for that matter). To me, sights is someplace where redundancy is very important. I am probably going to get some put on later.

Instead of the truglo may I suggest Simmons pro diamond shotgun scope. You can get em off Natchez for 40 bucks. You can mount them low in front of the hammer and they are tough as nails.

I took this advice for a 45-70 I got. Does have clear optics. I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet to see how it holds up, but I suspect it will be fine. I kind of like the little diamond pattern site.

+1 all the way. Or at the minimum just supply the right holes with little screws to be able to add them if desired. I'm making up a little .410 slugger barrel with some Remington sights epoxied in place.

picked up the scope last night, as well as an ammo cuff and a bore snake

It looks like you got the Allen nine round holder. Do yourself a favor, cut a little slit about a half inch in front of the swivel stud, singe the frayed edge and pull the cuff over the stud. It won't squirm around on you that way

I took it up back yesterday evening to burn up half a box of ammo, and see if I could hit some paper. Eyeball bore-sighted the setup, which got me pretty close(7" high, 4" right). At fifty yards, prone(not a position I am used to, admittedly .. really need to do more shooting in field positions), she's grouping a hair over an inch with Fed. Fusion 150 grains. Not too shabby for a first time out. Pretty sure if I shoot it some more, possibly from a bench if I can get one set up,(and maybe find/work up a load she likes a little better) I can shrink that down. Then I just need to start shooting further out.

Here's what I do with a new rifle or scope. Bore sight it. Put the load on ballistics tables for a 100 yard sight in. There wil be a point where the bullet crosses line of sight climbing, Usually 25 to 35 yards. I put a target at that range and shoot. When it is zeroed there, I move it to 100 and check again. From there, I do the same thing for any distance I want that bullet to shoot....anywhere from 125 to 400 yards. I just make the adjustments on the scope and run the test. Ninety percent of the time it works well. About 10 percent require recalculation. It saves a lot of ammo.
