Ruger #1 gripe

     Just purchased a new Ruger  #1 45-70 factory original no modifications., I took it to the range today and shot 4 factory load 300 gr shells through it with elevator sights maxed out as high as they will go and bullets are hitting 6 inches low at 25 yards. How can a new rifle leave the factory with sights that are not usable? This is the third rifle I've had problem with new from factory. One a Remington pump with a trigger so hard it took over 20 lbs  of pressure to pull the trigger. The last being a hennery with a dented chamber, I think the gun gods are punishing me. Trying to figure out what to do on this rifle if I take it back hard to say when it will come back to me, I plan on putting a 4 power scope on it but would like the iron sights to atleast be usable.

I would say that somehow it got the wrong front sight put on it.  Larry

I would have to agree with Trotter there. I have a No 1s 45-70 stainless. I bought mine as a "used" gun. It was new and on the rack in a store someone dropped it and broke the leaf off of the rear sight so I used able to get a used price on a once dropped new gun. it shoots like a champ.  I have a owned a variety of rugers and none of had sight problems from the factory. I would wager that this is a mistake somehow and maybe a call or email to ruger could get it corrected. To fix it on your own terms the cheapest thing to do is replace the front sight if its made the way mine is. A shorter front sight should do the trick.

I have a Ruger no1 in .458win mag.
If you take a close look at the rear sight there are  two little screws holding
on the little plate that has the round notch. Well that little plate is reversible
it has a square notch in it as well. I reversed it so I had a round bead with the square notch.
It turned out to be quite good sight picture, one I can shoot.

I've had to change the sights on the last two rifles I purchased; a Henry H001T and a Savage 93. Both had what looked like Marbles sights on them. Henry told me that was the sight Marbles recommended. I went throught the application guide on Marble website and came up with a different answer, ordered new front sights and was pleased with the results. I think I got them from Brownells.


The rear sight on my 1-RSI and also my 10/22 look like Marbles #69 folding leaf sights. Marbles also makes models #69H and #69EH,
high and extra high. The front sight looks like something I would booger up trying to change, but the rear sight is easy.
