Another 32-20
« on: April 07, 2013, 02:48:23 PM »
Finishing up on a stub job on a .410, not an H&R, but the next time I do a stub on a .410 I may try doing it like this one.  I made the stub very long to get the use of the snap on forearm stud and match up the diamater of the barrel to the stub.  This is another .303 barrel.  Only issue I found is that this particular barrel is ground egg shaped by the factory when they contoured it, so I have to get a split collar to clamp on it so I can hold it in steady rest to counter bore the breach end for the nut, also have to machine off the excess at the breach.  Goes on a Winchester 370.  Larry

Larry,
This looks like another fun project that will surely make a good shooter for a holy man.  ;)

161, I bought my .32-20 "Trotter Special" barrel used from another member here, so I can't tell you what the actual cost is to have one made.  I haven't got a clue as to what Larry would charge to make one.  But, you have to consider furnishing a barrel for the stub, buying a .303 barrel, ejector/extractor, etc. plus the gunsmithing.  I CAN tell you Larry does superb work and I can shoot flies on the target at 50 yards and almost put three in the same hole at 100.  I enjoyed the .32-30 so much I bought a new Marlin levergun in the same caliber and am looking for a revolver to match.  You can reload it with cast plinking bullets almost as cheaply as shooting rimfire .22s.  Cost?  You're not going to get one for what you'd pay for an extra barrel from H&R or a used one on the forum.  I will say, whatever the cost.....it's well worth it.  If you want it, bite the bullet and get your wallet out.

Larry should be the one to quote his prices, however, I will add that he was very fair and reasonable with me.  We traded out on the 303 barrel which lessened the cost.  I am pleased with his price, the work (photos) and especially the communication during the project.  He has been very patient with my impatience to see the finished product!  ::)   I understand that this is a "handi" forum, but if permissible, will post photos when we get the rifle assembled so anyone interested can see the finished product.  Gerald  (Dinny - thx for the personal compliment and for your service to all of us....I try to be.)  :)

First is a picture of the stub in the lathe with the split collar on it, I bored the center with it closed up tight to .005 smaller than the part of the barrel I clamped it to, then clamped it on and turned it round, worked out well.

This is the barrel assembled, collar still on it because I still need to trim off the breach end and chamber it and need something round to run the steady rest on.  Larry

Bet this would work out really well with a Handi .410.  Larry

I have a Versa Pack .410/22. I bet my kids would never even miss the .410 if all I gave them was the .22. ::) tempting, very tempting......

I really wish some young person with a little lathe and some talent woud jump into doing these.  I think if you tooled it up right and limited what you did to low pressure simple jobs that you could make a good sideline job out of it.  I am just too old and too easily distracted to do it.  Larry

Larry, what kind of lathe do you use?  (recommend?)  No I'm not a machinist, but would love to learn some hobby-smithing.

Grizzly is just up the road in Bellingham.  Have you ever seen a lathe on their showroom floor you would recommend for the kind of work you do?  :)

Larry that is beautiful.  I know our resident Padre is going to love it ;)   Mine is a work of perfection.  Thank you.

I've got an "almost old fart" to nominate to take some of it over for ya.  George Mann, jeepman1948.  That way perhaps we could force him into semi-retirement to service our addiction.  I think he'd rather be in his shop than rolling over the roads of the south-west.  He does great work.....However, I don't think the Handiholic Group offers medical insurance, etc.  That's what still has Patty pushing out bids and proposals.

WOW!  It turned out better than even I expected.  Keeping the contour of the original barrel kept the slim classic lines of the old Winchester right on!   8)   I had a Savage 219 hornet when I was 18 over 50 years ago and got rid of it....still miss that old rifle!   :(   Maybe this one will help scratch that old itch!!  ;D  Larry, the check is in the mail today (no, really, it IS on the way!  ;)  and happy to do so!)  Gerald

Gerald, the only problem I have with my .32-20s is that I love them so much I keep wanting to do more with them.  The maxis and the .32s are my grab and run rifles.  I get tempted to use the .32-20 in marginal areas that I need to avoid with it....like reaching to far or knocking down too much, or both.  Pardon the French, but it is a Hell of a rifle for a little one.  There's nothing not to like about it.  easy and cheap to reload for, deadly accurate and very flexible.  I wouldn't try a bear, moose, or elk with it, but anything else that wanders Michigan is fair game.  CW took a nice buck with his this past Fall in Connecticut.

I wish you lots of years of fun with it.

I have a very small basic setup.  It is an Atlas 6 inch lathe with a bed extension.  I have a milling attachment, steady rest and a set of collets.  Two three jaw and one 4 jaw chuck.  You would really want somethig with a little more power.  I should really have a follow rest and a quick change gear box.  You need to be able to get something about 30 inches long between centers, not just a 30 inch bed length.  Larry

If you take a typical lathe spec'ed, say 36" between centers that will be the max 'between centers only', and most of us are using chucks more that centers. Put on a chuck and plan on losing 6" so a 36" becomes that 30".
Larry, I admire the work you do on that small Atlas! (I started with one and have had 3) As you well know and a wise man once said," you can do small work on a big lathe but not always so the other way around". My unit for the past 30yrs has been a Craftsman 12x36 w/o the gearbox. No GB for small threading (unless trying to duplicate proprietary threads) is more quickly done with taps and dies supported in the appropriate fixtures. So, for a lot of gunwork a GB isnt nessesary BUT, a large dia. spindle hole is. Mine is too small, as are most of the older, and affordable benchtop lathe units. This means that one must chuck up a barrel 'overbed' rather than having some of it through the spindle. What Im getting at here is that if you can run larger dia. stock through the spindle you can get by with a shorter bed for a lot of work.
For anyone who really wants to learn this stuff I suggest taking a course at your local Voc-Tech school, say Machining 101, etc. You will gain invaluable experience, MAKE some stuff, and learn what you need for determining what size machine you want to get into.
There are some nice used machines out there (and a bunch of junk). Its good to know how to tell the difference.

As soon as it arrives and I get some rounds loaded up, will post a picture of some targets.  Have to scope it first.  I knew it would look good, but this is wonderful....you can't see the seam where the barrels are joined.   :o :)   Gerald

Gerald, it's the same with mine.  It is impossible to see the seam holding the rifle in your hands.  Larry is a superb craftsman.  I think a gunsmith would have difficulty figuring out that it was a stub.  Your real awakening is yet to come....wait til you shoot it.  My .22s, LR and Mag, are sitting around collecting dust, plus it's giving the Maxis a run for their money.  It is a VERY Handi Rifle.  Enjoy it Padre, and If I can help with anything, PM me.

What kind of brass life are you guys getting running the 32-20 at it's upper end?  Are you neck or full length sizing?
