I want a 10mm.....but what one?
« on: April 08, 2013, 03:32:19 AM »
Hey guys, iv got a hankering for a new glock, mainly a new glock 10mm. I have a glock 21 sf and I love and trust that gun more than any other firearm in my house. Being in the nazi state of ny even worse, Erie county our wonderful judge has denied my request for a concealed carry permit so generally the only time it will be carried is when I'm "hunting/target" shooting. What are the pros and cons between the 20sf and the 29sf. What do YOU own and why?

I have a 29SF. I put a LW standard barrel in and a 21# spring/Non captured recoil guide rod. I also like the Pearce finger extension on the mag for grip control. I added a set of night sights with a slightly wider rear notch. I don't handload.  It functions perfectly with Blaser 200 TMJ, and for the nuclear loads. In fact, both the Buffalo Bore 155 DPX and Double Tap 230 HC feel like shooting a hot 9mm round in a G19. The 29SF carries as well for me as a G23/G19/G36 I've had, and shoots as flat as an M1 Carbine to 75yds and beyond ( I've hit a good number of Clays at 75yds, missed some sure, but was still "minute of coyote",ha)
I "may" get a G20 Gen 4 later in life, when the madness has subsided, and it will. Even though I have big hands, I prefer a slimmer/smaller feeling grip ( decades of 1911s will do that to you!) The G20SF didn't feel that great to me, and since I hit so far out with stubby, I use it for full time carry/woods gun/carbine replacement. I think, however, for your purpose, the Gen 4 G20 will feel the most familiar to you, and you can't carry anyway (well, that's up to you, its your life, protect it as you see fit) I have used a lot of handgun rounds since I was 16 (my first was a little Browning .32 my Great Uncle traded me for a shotgun he liked) was a die hard .45 ACP fan (still am) but when I saw how flat the 10mm is, gee whiz, I'm happy! BTW, both of those BB and DT rounds shot completely through two freshly killed hog heads in a bullet test! Its also "rumored" that the craters on the moon were caused by drunk Red Necks shooting their 10mms in the air!  8) :o

Now I was told they were caused by 10gauge shotguns used for goose hunting! after lead shot was banned.  The big ones I mean, the little ones may have been 10 mm.  ;)

If you cannot consealed carry it... Its kinda moot...G20 all the way!!!  ::) ;) Then get a good 6'' barrel, a couple hundred new Star Line cases and bullets of your liking. I like a good WFNGC cast or a Nosler/Hornady 200jhp and start working up loads. ;)

The G20 will lay them lo!

C-dub, Quite a handsome devil since you lost all that weight since your heart attack! BTW, all that 10 mil brass I bought from you awhile back has been getting some good use.

Gad to hear it, 98!!

Thank you for the compliments! My Dr is happy with me, I am just over four years now (Jan 2009)since the heart attack and 230# I was down to 210# but lost the weight so fast (was 270+) I lost allot of muscle mass too.  :o So I have been able to recoup some since but the weight stays off and all my ''numbers'' are great! I acnt do what I did before... but I'm alive!  ;D ;D

BTW, I have only 2 10MM's now. In a moment of stupidity I sold my Gold Cup 10... :-[ :-[ :-[ So I still have my reworked Delta and the G20 ::) ;) . I bought a 1K once fired 10MM from a govt employee about a year back Plus I had been saving a couple hundred Star line cases I bought when they first started making them.

Here is some pics OS..

I have three barrels, the factory 4.6'' and Lone Wolf 5.5'' and the 6'' KKM you saw before. The after market barrels have better support for the full house loadings, PLUS the longer barrel for better ballistics. The LW barrel is also ported and it works well on the heavy loads, But I prefer the KKM.

Jim Cirrilo was a New Yorker too.  He was on Robbery Stakeout for NYPD I believe? He loved the G20 Glock 10mm for deer hunting. His favorite Robber slayer though was an M2 Carbine, but he also used revolvers...he was a character, but quite a man. Getting to hunt those big whitetail in upstate may be worth dealing with the clowns in Albany! Good luck to you Pard.

All I can say is I was no a Glock fan , had the only one that would not feed , after a bunch of years warmed up to them. My need was a light powerful gun to carry hunting , got tired of the Redhawke nice gun but heavy . So I tried a Colt Delta Elite . To nice of a gun for hunting in briars and ATV riding and getting wet and muddy. So Got rid of the Colt and got a G20. The G20 is easy in a shoulder rig , holds lots of bullets, accurate , can get wet be neglected and work fine. What's not to like ? Never shot the small 10 but would bet it's a handful. For carry it may work if second shot wasn't to slow ( I mean on target  ;)  quick) but for everyday hunting , home protection , truck gun I would go G20. If I were going to a longer bbl I might be inclined to get the longer slide if aval. That would be one nice looking gun. Add camo ...............Yea I couldn't afford it either .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

My G29 is indeed a handful of brute with hot loads and the factory RS set up. With the #21 its very controllable, even with the hot loads. Now, a 10ga probably did make the bigger craters, but there are more smaller ones, so the 10mm is powerful AND accurate, ha.

Every gun has it's purpose.  If the it  fits the purpose.....I take it, I don't care how pretty it is.  However, I don't take a target weapon into the field.

I reckon it's a good thing we all don't like the same thing.  I'd love to have a Delta, but I wouldn't walk across the street for a free Glock.  Also a good thing this ain't the Glock forum.

Why do I not like Glocks?  I don't actually know.   You sure don't ever hear anything bad about them.  They don't jam.  Easy to carry compared to the Colt.  More rounds.  I've just always stayed away from them.  I remember when they became popular with police.  The officers who bought them had nothing but praise for any Glock in any caliber.
I suppose I can't get by the appearance.  Which means nothing at all, I know.  But give me a Colt any day.
And the 10mm caliber?  I reckon it's the best ever developed for an auto.

The 10MM and the 38 Super are the two tops in a auto pistol IMHO...

I did not want to like the Glock either... but was more or less forced to with the ''job'' and all. Now I would and do stake my life on one with out hesitation...

While I don't care for the Glock,it's a matter of weight to me. I personally like the Witness series of pistols for my 10 mil platform. The 1911 just does not fit my hand. My favorite is the Megastar by Star, but it is huge and no longer made. Also the first generation S&W 610 with the 5 inch barrel. A perfect combo.

What about the CZ's?  They make a good pistol and are available in 10MM...

That would be my choice. I have a CZ-75 in 40 cal.

You could also of course find a Bren Ten. Pretty close in design to a CZ.  :)

Was not aware CZ made one in 10mil. Anyway, the Witness is a clone of the 75,with that being said,I'll go look at one. A person can't have to many 10's!

I had the 610 first gen. a very nice gun to be sure but it seemed to lose some steam along side a Colt Delta Elite. Guess it was the cyl. bbl. gap. And why tote such a large gun when you can get better performance out of a lighter more compact easier to tote package. ? I don't care for the Glock as a BBQ gun or like the trigger so much but for a carry anytime anywhere in any weather it is a good choice . A choice I made several years ago and sold the other two. And have never looked back.

I'm a SIG man all the way, and then some, but when it comes to 10mm the G20 is the way to go, hands down.

Can a 40 +P S&W shoot in a 10mm in an emergency?  Will it Cycle the action?  I know it would have to be cleaned out real good after using it, but 40 S&W is much cheaper unless you reload.

Maybe , if your gun feeds from a magazine and the rim slides under the extractor it might fire if there is enough tension to hold the round in place and take the strike from the firing pin / striker.
 My Glock 23 A 40 S&W will fire 9mm and My 19 , 9mm will fire 380 acp.
Safe ? maybe not. The 9mm expanded in an odd shape the 380 split.

I thought the 40 S&W was a 10mm cut shorter so the base would be the same.  If the base is the same and the width the same, would it not act like a 38 special in a 357?  However, the recoil from a 40 might not be enough to cycle the action.  I do know a 9mm base is smaller than a 40 and a 380 base is intentionally made smaller than a 9mm, but I did think the 40 is was only a shorter 10 and renamed by S&W.  In the reloading book the base of the 10mm is 1 thousandth of an inch wider than a 40.  Length is about 0.14 longer.  Might work with +P 40 loads.  Just wonder if anyone has tried it.  I was/am considering buying a 10mm myself if it can shoot 40's also.

Guys,

The 40S&W is for firing in 40S&W labled barrels. 10mm is for barrels labled 10mm. Two acceptions I can think of would be the S&W 10mm REVOLVER and the Ruger black hawk REVOLVER. But when used in a semi auto you must use the caliber it was designed for. Remember semi auto calibers are generally rimless and head space off the case mouth. So chamber depth is a limitation. Some shorter caliber may fall right into a longer chamber.

Now having said that, in a SHTF situation some semis MAY fire a 40 S&W from a 10MM. BUT know auto rounds head space off the rim and a 40 is much too short for a 10mm chamber. So you would be reling on the extractor to do dbl duty and its preformance would likely be spoty at best.  Comparing this to a 38 in a 357 is apples to oranges.

One other way to acomish this and its not for all pistol designs, would be to buy appropriate barrel and magazine. As in the case with the GLOCK. Look for conversion.

For $125.00 and shipping you can shoot 40 cal in a 10 mm G20 or 20sf
Prolly the only way I would try it. not sure but you may need a 40 cal magazine as well.
