Thunder Mug as a Chimney sweep goes wrong.
« on: April 08, 2013, 05:03:16 AM »
I thought I would try to clean my Dads Chimney with a thunder mug. Not such a good Idea.

A piece of bread about the size of a dime did this to a steel elbow. Not the galvanized kind.

The practical use of "shooting stacks" that I have witnessed were very large brick chimneys. The fuel had always been coal. It was explained to me that the expansion of muzzle gasses and sound waves loosened the ash, which was very dry. Mostly it was carried by the stack's air draft out in the town. Houses got very dirty, so they did it at night. These stack had multiple layers of brick and refractory cement. Metal couldn't hold up to it.

It reminded me of an old battleship blowing up !  8)  Does he have an air conditioning unit around to where you could get a thunder mug under it :o ?  This could be fun .

Sorry just kidding.

The mug was just .75 caliber. I think the bread was stale and that added to the problem. It wa just a corner of a slice of white bread. It crumbled apart on me it was so stale and I lost most the crumbs on the floor. The first shot was 150 grain no wadding and it worked good. If I do this again I'm going to use 50 to 80 grain max no wadding.

Isn't there some one here who keeps preaching bread is not a wad, it is a projectile-oh yeah me.    Next time use the ever harmless grass clippings, so we can see how big a hole that makes.

Rated G For everyone. 150 grain no wadding and it wasn't bad. This was the first shot in the oven. If I would have used Id say 80 no wadding at all and kept it back from the elbow It would have been worked pretty good and been a good way to clean the pipe I think. Bread is for sure a serious projectile that I now think could travel far and hard.
As for the neighbors I don't really put anything off over there that is larger than 75 caliber. Its a small little coal patch and there's neighbors everywhere. I have shot some foil balls out of a few large mortars and im now wondering if There's a foil ball lodged in someone's house somewhere.
Anyone need  there chimney cleaned. Let me know I would like to experiment more!

I have launced a few vent caps with a delayed ignition boiler that has far less explosive power than 200 grains of powder.  I was expecting at the Tee to see it detach from the building and launch the vent sideways.  But the venting at the bottom of the tee probably stoped it as it was a place ot vent to expanding gases.
Was the bottom of the vent open?  or did it blow out the cap?
