45-70 project UPDATE 5/7/13

I just got the last piece I need for my latest project.  Still got to do the barrel fitting routine, it locks up but slight side to side movement. 

What I need help with is what to call it!  It has a TDC stock with a factory rubber buttpad, (thanks Eskimo36) a BC Carbine reciever, ( thanks Rustyreel) and a 45-70 BC barrel. ( thanks Victor3)

Should I call it a Buffalo TDC? Maybe a BDC? How bout a New Model BC?  I am open to any suggestions. . .let's have a little fun with it!!

I like it.  I have both the TDC set and a BC set.  I think they both look best if you swap the forearms.

I don't think so, the TDC was discontinued last year, but I suppose it's always possible they still have some.

I think ya need ta give it a classic name like Bodertha, Caldonia or Matilda.  She's certainly going to be a wonderful long time companion.  A buddy builds beautiful custom flintlocks and names them that way.  So it followed that we named our lady hound dogs to match the rifles.  My Bodertha and Caldonia are running bunnies with St. Pete just now.  I miss them.

I got two of the TDCs a year or two ago because I couldn't live with the metal butt plate.  I'd PM Brian and see if he can find one lurking in a back bin and dust it off for you.  A lot of times there are odds and ends running around loose Madison doesn't know about.

I like it, and have lots of fun with it.

The side to side movement is when it is closed and without the forearm.

Sounds like your fit is 'ever so close'. Try this, cut a strip of alum. beverage can to fit on the hinge pin/barrel lug and close her up. Those shims are pretty thin, only a couple thou', but you can stack 'em and easily get an idea how thick a 'better' shim you need to use.

It's pretty close for sure.  I planned on doing just that thing next chance I get.  I did not have my feeler gauge with me at my girlfriend's house so I did the aluminum foil test.  Two layers of foil I can work out on lockup.  Three layers I cannot pull out, so I am guessing .015 gap??  I will get my feeler gauge after it tonight.

Is there any difference between adult beverage and non-adult beverage can thickness?  How bout brand?  ;D;D

Just dance with who ya brung (or drank  ;D ). You can superglue pieces together (only a tiny dab) after forming to make them easier to manage. Closing up with a 'little authority' a few times on each piece will help to seat and shape and get you an honest fit.

 Looking good. Glad you were able to put the bbl to use. It was on my back burner to do so myself but somebody blew the pilot light out.  :)

Well I finally got around to doing an accurate measurement on the lockup.  It is tighter on one side than the other.  I tried a shim from an RC Cola can but it would not lock up.  I cut a strip off the shim and shimmed one side, the side that was loose and now it locks up tight all across.  Now I just need to smoke the shelf again and check the latch engagement.

Yesterday I chambered a cartridge and tried to close the action and it would not lock up.  I took the shim out and it did fine.  I shot it a couple of times and it functioned well.  Anything else I should look for?

Highish primer can  to that, as can a thick rim (not all brass is alike) or a bullet ojive holding it from seating all in.
I would use a stick of FL sized empty brass first now. Then some different brands if you have them.
