Model 40 357 Super Mag
« on: April 08, 2013, 01:16:20 PM »
I just fell into one of these today, came with the box all papers and and extra 8" barrel still wrapped in the original paper from the factory.  This one has the wood grips and the barrel shroud has the two vents on the sides.  Pistol shows very little use and came with a full box of Remington ammo as well as 4 still loaded in the second box.  (Price tags on the ammo were from Buttreys Food Store and were $9.98 a box.  When was the last time you bought ammo at a grocery store??)  I don't know what these are worth now days, bought it because I have two Handi Rifles that shoot the 357 Max and love em.  I traded a NIB Ruger SBH stainless 44 mag for it, both of us were happy with the trade, but I think I got the better end of the deal.  Any ideas on value??  Sorry, I don't know how to post pics, it's in very good shape, little wear on the cylinder and a couple of surface marks on the top of the shroud.  DP

Congrats on the Dan !!!!  I have 2 of the model 15-2 (357) and am very pleased with them. I've never run across a super mag for sale, but have seen them occasionally listed on the auctions. My best recall is they were bringing 600-800, not for sure on the extra barrel but would guess 50-100 on it. If your not familiar with it, there is an excellent DW forum at danwessonforum.com. They're kinda like the handi rifle forum here---might post there to get more info.

Thanks David!  I had a model 15 many years ago, great revolver, sold during a divorce.  Glad to find this one, (the 15 was MUCH lighter ::) )   I'll check out the other site, thanks for the referral.  This came in the original box and the papers as well.  Can't wait to try this one out, going to try handloads with 158, 170 and 180 gr bullets.  I'm thinking this just may take a mule deer this year.  DP

I have a 740 which is the stainless version of your 40. You need to go to the Dan Wesson Forum.

Those Model 40s were set up at the plant to weigh just under the max allowed by IHSMA>> with the original wood grip. So you should plan on keeping that grip close if you compete or plan to sell some day

Early on (1980s) the gun writers thought they'd see how fast they could push light bullets. This ignited the discussion on gas cutting of the frame. These barrels fit very close to the cylinder face increasing the gas velocity. After we found the use of heavier (180 and 200gr) bullets caused the powder to burn more completely the cutting abated. It may cut a bit but it doesn't cut deeply.
The barrel muzzle nut had a few incidences of seizing.  The use of anti-seize may defeat that tendency. The nuts were also soft and the tool would strip the notches.  You do have the tool, don't you ?  They are a fine revolver. rp
