If you keep on searching I think its the M80 ammo your looking for.  Why armor precing?  I find even the hunting soft points will go thru steel plates don't tell anyone.

Sometimes they are at gun shows , mostly Greek ammo I think. Sometimes other off shore surplus. US made military ammo for the 30-06 is becoming a collector item. If by chance you reload or have a friend who does there are pulled bullets for sale ( from 7.62X54 ) or you could pull a few and reload them . BTW a 223 AP round will go into an engine block.

How could AP cause any extra wear on the bbl?

Shootall:  the armor piercing rounds for the 06 are copper jacketed but with a steel core.  They do not penetrate engine blocks.  They will penetrate a oil pan or take a carboreator off its base or shatter it, maybe go through it, but they won't penetrate the block.  They may crack a exhaust manifold but they won't penetrate the block, crack the crank or camshaft.

They will bust up the engine on a Honda motorcycle though, but that is not the same as even a jeep engine.

Hum I have seen them go into a cyl on an engine granted not thru. There were two guys back in the 70's who got in a feud one shot a hole into a shed the other owned and hit his boat. The other shot into his engine in his PU truck cracking the block not sure if it entered on that one or not. Like I noted not knowing what country they come from how do you know what jacket material they used ? But maybe as important what powder they may have used ? some is more abrasive that others and off shore ammo makers often times don't care.
BTW why would AP rounds get copper jackets when steel is often used on ball ammo ?There is some from Korea 5.56 ammo AP that has steel jackets before the crunch it sold for a lot less than US made stuff. And yes I am aware the penetrator in the round is what does the work.

I assure you the 06 round will go into the side of a small block chevy block and exit through the bottom of the oil galley beneath the intake leaving a hole I could stick my hand through.  There was no intake in place at the time.  This is with standard ball ammo and not even AP cored slugs.  The 338 Win Mag with a heavy solid went directly through a complete big block dodge leaving nothing but the heads holding the 2 block halves together.  Cast iron blocks tend to shatter like glass from the impact alone.  Even M855 in 5.56 will go into a cylinder through the side of the block taking enough cast iron with it to render the engine nonfunctional junk.

That could just as easily be said of many types of foreign milsurp ammo, AP or otherwise.

Yes and in the case of a very expensive rifle caution should be used. It's not my rifle so it's up to the owner. Personally I would not shoot the junk thru. my M1-A it has a NM bbl which the M1-D may have one similar and I doubt they are made to be abused.  But to each there own. I have a mod 70 in 3006 and it has had  a bit of surplus ammo thru. it back when I did not know better. At one time it was a good shooter inch or so at 100 yards now 2.5 3 maybe . Total rounds thru. the rifle under 500 maybe 400.

US M2 AP ammo is black tipped. It has a copper jacketed bullet with a small amount of lead surounding a needle sharp Tungsten Carbide insert. Total weight is a nominal 165grs, had been known to be almost 168 grs at times.

Up to 55 grs of powder for a velocity of 2740 FPS. (852 powder I think)

It was spec'd to fully penetrate 5/8" armor plate, I know it will penetrate two sections of rail road steel.

When times were hard and these bullets were cheap, we would genlty beat the copper and lead off and use the insert as a center punch.

My Father (who fought in Korea) said it was a much better killer in than the regular M2 Ball. When we shot hogs with it it blew big holes in the piggies.

If you want some, check out the CMP forum, there ammo for sale section usually has some.

There are steel core surplus bullets around  a white or copper colored jacket.  The jacket on out hunting bullets is a copper coated steel jacket i found at out when testing ballastics many years ago when the jacket explodes into a butterfly piece of shrapnel. I shot at an air supply tank from an 18 wheeler at the range that was left there with my 357mag and 44mag and just dented it.  then i took out  30-06  and put a round ru it sideways and t looked like a small missle went thru it.

Lets face it if we had a full copper jacket on our hunting and target rounds we would have more copper left in the bores.  now if u dont believe me take a file to your bullets.

Not really, some of the military surplus is a lead bullet with a copper plated steel jacket. So it will stick to a magnet but has a lead core. Someone was shooting some Wolf branded 45 ammo at the steel match Saturday and they were copper plated steel jacketed. We were picking them up on the range.

Far as I know, no US M2 AP ammo had a tungsten insert. Always hardened steel. You wouldn't be using a piece of tungsten as a center punch; way to soft. We used to machine tungsten tips for our darts on the lathe at work. It's softer than mild steel.

Tungsten AP projectiles get their penetrating power from their heavier-than-lead weight + relative hardness compared to lead.

the US has not made AP ammo for a 30-06 since 1954 .If your ammo is older it most likely came from Sweden or other country. Also some modern AP ammo has Teflon coating to protect the barrels of the rifles it is shot in according to some.

Armor piercing ammo has always been a grey area that most do not understand. Frankly, unless you're carrying or have memorized a military spec book, you really don't know what ammo is what. Even worse, a lot of ammo is sold outside of its original packaging and all info is lost except the military headstamp and a black tip. There was the original AP ammo made early and before WWII that was a steel insert/core inside of a lead surround with a copper jacket. During the early part of the war, the inserts/core became a tungsten carbide core weighing in at 168.5 grs. Both bullets were made and issued during the war. The difference was on the packaging. It would have been marked as 30 caliber M2 ammo or it would have had a number like 1774, 1830, 559 as the ammo type. All of it is black tipped. The 30 caliber M2 is of the steel core type, the others carry a tungsten carbide core. Unless you have the original packaging, you're not going to know. Rarely will you come across AP ammo that has a heavy bullet-241grs. These carry the tungsten carbide core/insert and were used primarily by the Navy. I've only seen one box in my 66 years but not all AP is 150gr as there are many bullet weights.
