NSA data center front and center in debate over liberty, security and privacy  By Catherine Herridge
Published April 12, 2013

  •
Twenty-five miles due south of Salt Lake City, a massive construction project is nearing completion.  The heavily secured site belongs to the National Security Agency.
"The spy center" -- that's what some of the locals like Jasmine Widmer, who works at Bluffdale's sandwich shop, told our Fox News team as part of an eight month investigation into data collection and privacy rights that will be broadcast Sunday at 9 p.m. ET called "Fox News News Reporting: Your Secrets Out.”

The NSA says the Utah Data Center is a facility for the intelligence community that will have a major focus on cyber security. The agency will neither confirm nor deny specifics. Some published reports suggest it could hold 5 zettabytes of data. (Just one zettabyte is the equivalent of about 62 billion stacked iPhones 5's-- that stretches past the moon.
One man we hoped would answer our questions, the current director of the NSA General Keith Alexander, declined Fox News's requests to sit down for an interview, so we stopped by the offices of a Washington think tank, where Alexander was speaking at a cyber security event last year.

Asked if the Utah Data Center would hold the data of American citizens,  Alexander said, "No...we don't hold data on U.S. citizens," adding that the NSA staff "take protecting your civil liberties and privacy as the most important thing that they do, and securing this nation."
But critics, including former NSA employees, say the data center is front and center in the debate over liberty, security and privacy.

"[It] raises the most serious questions about the vast amount of data that could be kept in one place for many, many different sources,"  Thomas Drake told Fox News.
Drake -- who worked at the NSA from Aug. 2001 to Aug. 2008 and was unsuccessfully prosecuted on espionage charges -- says Americans should be concerned about letting the government go too far in the name of security.
"It's in secret so you don't really know," Drake explained. "It's benign, right. If I haven't -- and if I haven't done anything wrong it doesn't matter. The only way you can have perfect security is have a perfect surveillance state. That's George Orwell. That's 1984. That's what that would look like."

Fellow NSA whistleblower Bill Binney, who worked at the NSA for nearly four decades, says it's about the possibility that the government's stunning new capacity to collect, store and analyze data could be abused.

"It's really a-- turnkey situation, where it could be turned quickly and become a totalitarian state pretty quickly," he said. "The capacities to do that is being set up. Now it's a question of if we get the wrong person in office, or if certain people set up their network internally in government, they could make that happen quickly."
According to NSA's chief compliance officer John Delong, whose job is to make sure the laws and policies designed to protect the privacy of U.S. persons is being enforced, part of the frustration is that the rules are specific and secret.

"I think that's sort of the collision, is you have classified rules," DeLong explained during an hour long meeting with Fox News at the NSA. "You now have a somewhat more public data center,"
"These aren't just, like, general policy pronouncements of 'You shall protect privacy.'" he said.
DeLong added that another misconception is that there is only internal oversight, when he says there is "a tremendous amount of external oversight" from the Justice Department, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and others.

In an email, Vanee' Vines, a public information officer for the NSA, said that the Utah Data Center will be "a state-of-the-art facility designed to support the Intelligence Community’s efforts to further strengthen and protect the nation. NSA is the executive agent for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and will be the lead agency at the center.”
Because the Utah Data Center is a "secure facility" and you cannot go inside without the needed security clearances, Fox News rented a helicopter and took to the skies, where the depth and breadth of the Utah Center were stunning.

The aerial video footage is exclusive to the Fox News investigation and posted here.  Two weeks after our filming, the helicopter pilot reported to our Fox News team that he had been visited by the FBI on a "national security matter."

The pilot said, according to the FBI agents, that the NSA had taken photos of the helicopter once it made several flyovers.  These photos allowed the NSA to identify the make and manufacturer of the helicopter in California who, in turn, told the NSA who operates it in the Salt Lake City area.

The FBI wanted to know if we had the proper air space clearances to flyover the site, which the Fox News team did.   Satisfied that the pilot was not flying "terrorists" over the site, the questioning concluded.  While the pilot passed along the Fox News contact information, there was no further inquiries.
Binney said the helicopter incident "showed the capability of the U.S. government to use information to trace people, their relationship to others and to raise suspicions about their activities and intentions."

Right after last week where the IRS announced that it had the right to read people's emails .
And I'm not talking about during an audit , they can go in and violate your privacy at any time
without you knowing it . Or your text messages or listen in on your phone convertations .
I first heard about this on RT believe it or not. They are a Russian news service owned by the old
Radio Moscow bunch who in the past would often blow the cover off stories like this .
Not because they are good guys , but because they enjoy showing the world the failures of our so
called free society . Last night they had a big deal on our ongoing gun control legislation .
Exposing the political greed side of it more than anything else while trouncing our own Constitution .

There are two sides to paranoia . One is an unfounded self destructive phobia that can also be
destructive or dangerous to others .

The other is an awareness brought on by ones own natural sense of self protection regarding ones surroundings or subsequent events . This is common in all species not just humans .

You have got to be able to distinguish between the two based solely on the events leading up to
it , VS a persons reaction to those events . Not by useing a comic web based tack on as any answer
to a story someone else is telling .

That only shows someone as minimizing what could be what someone else sees as a violation of
his or hers human rights in an ongoing political atmosphere that has been proven to be doing that .

Example : Someone tells you to be careful and to not go under there that block on that crane is         about to fall on you . Then someone else says that's nuts your only being parionoid .
Does it then matter ? Are you still going to walk under that block anyway just because someone else
says your parinoid and laughs at you ?

If you do anyway and it does fall on you are you then going to say " Awww its ok I was just being
parionoid and this whole thing was really funny ". When all the indications showed that the first
person was right about this accident or event occurring . Even when all the indications were that
it could happen .

This isn't the first or the only building like this. We have one in San Antonio on Potranco Road. It comes complete with constantine wire, anti-tank berms and a moat. There are very few windows and it looks more like a stalag. They have their own water system, sewer system, electrical generators, they need nothing from the outside. It was a Sony plant at one time but they converted the buildings and added a lot to it. When construction was going on, they completely bagged the buildings so you couldn't see what work was going on inside. Basic work on the buildings were done by a few local companies but when it came to the "secret" stuff, they Gov't did the work. I have a friend who worked on 2 of the 4 story buildings who got to see the complete plans and according to him these buildings are used to monitor everything that goes thru the internet including all of our posts on this site, your banking, your email, everything that happens on the internet. There's supposed to be another location in Washington State doing the same thing. This I can tell you though, when they switch on their security system for their systems, all remote controls for 15 miles do not work. It's a dampening field as they tell us. Yeah, I live within 15 miles of the POS. The Gov'ts response to that- live with it.

What's everybody worried about?  We all know the data is never entered incorrectly. We all know computers never make a mistake.  We all know that this data base can never be hacked.  The NSA guy that says it won't be used to store American citizen data must be truthful, just like the IRS says it won't spy on emails.  Whats to worry about?
When a boot is on your throat does it matter if is the right boot or left boot?

It can be very stressful at times especilly around this time of the year . April 15th and all the
trappings that go along with that . Then there is the kid that molest his little sister not once but
several times . Being a Juvenal protects them on a lot of things but when the state prosecuter
has had enough they end up in our laps . And I'm telling you some of these kids now days are very
messed up in the head . Some believe they are vampires , werewolves , space aliens , or worship
Satan . In session I can not allow my personal views or beliefs to become involved in any way .
Sometimes that makes it very hard to get through to a kid that I personally feel only needs to be
exposed to Christ . But there are guidelines I've got to go by that were set up by others.
Not like in Switzerland where I could just say you are nuts and commit the little creep !   >:(
