WASHINGTON (AP) -- A person briefed on the Boston Marathon investigation says the explosives were in 6-liter pressure cookers and placed in black duffel bags.

The person says the explosives were placed on the ground and contained shards of metal, nails and ball bearings. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

The person says law enforcement officials have some of the bomb components but did not yet know what was used to set off the explosives.

President Barack Obama said Tuesday the bombings were an act of terrorism but investigators do not know if they were carried out by an international or domestic organization, or perhaps by a "malevolent individual."

Have any liberals started clamoring for laws to restrict the capacity of pressure cookers to 3.4 liters?

Maybe background checks on buying nails and shards of metal?  "Never let a good crisis go to  waste"!

No fears Spruce, they'll soon be trying to stop the sale..not of pressure cookers or ball bearings but of the propellent used. First indication of this is they're avoiding the subject of what that propellent was. For now.

Funny how the authorities are begging for footage of what is supposed to be one of the most televised and recorded places on earth at that moment. Noone i guess saw the guy carrying pressure cookers in his backpack.. let along see the guy place them. Hopefully forthcoming details will clear this up. Anyone know Bill Ayers wherebouts during this time?  J

Gunpowder was mentioned on the news.

Well of course GUNpowder was mentioned on the news - MSM would never pass up a chance to shed a negative light on anything related to guns!

I'm only surprised they didn't call for an immediate and total ban on any and all gunpowders (and anything else with the word GUN in it)! ::)

A pressure cooker is quite heavy then fill it with a bang and a bunch of nails and ball bearings. That thing must have been heavy, I am surprised that one of the many cops did not notice the low hanging heavy back pack.

They've shown several supposedly on-the-scene pics of pieces of the pressure cooker. It looked remarkably clean for having just been in an explosion. Lots have mentioned black powder as the probable propellent but it seems it would have sooted the pressure cooker up some, must have used something else..

I agree, that thing had to weight a lot, is surprising noone noticed a thing.  J

"Ladies and gentlemen of the Senate: After recent events in Boston it has become imperative that we as a nation do something about pressure cookers! These hideous and deadly devices have no place in a free society! They have known to main innocent housewives and can be used as a deadly destructive device by those who hate our freedom!

Frankly, no one NEEDS to own a deadly pressure cooker anyway! These modern devices have no real reason to exist, we have had water bath canners available for many years and there is nothing that cannot be done with them that a pressure cooker can do! We particularly need to get control of the high capacity pressure cookers that can hold so much explosive that they could take down a building full of people! These easily concealable devices must be removed from the hands of those who would use them against us.

That is why I, Senator Hogbien Johnson, am proposing legislation to institute background checks on people trying to buy pressure cookers and a system of registration! There is no reason this cannot be used to create a national data base of pressure cooker owners, with the ultimate goal of a complete ban and confiscation of all pressure cookers.

We need do this it so our children will be safe!"

Thank you for your consideration,

Senator Hogbien Johnson"

today during my quest for a tire,
i heard on the truck radio some yo-yo
actually comment about pressure
cookers, and who needs them anymore,
and bs like "my old grandma used
a pressure cooker back in the 1950's-
why do they still sell those?"

i guess next comes questioning the need
for anything that can be used to kill.
how will folks write after after all the
pens and pencils are confiscated?
if you don't use all your bricks in building
something, will you be required to turn the excess
in for destruction since a single brick can
be hurled at someone and harm them ?
will longneck beer bottles be banned ?
kitchen knives as in england ?
rocks ?
toothbrushes with handles over a
certain length ?
background checks for bb's ?

Any one notice that barry is more upset that the gun bill failed than he was about the bombing!
