I read and heard news reports that Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback gets a turkey, and a ticket. Governor Brownback on April 12, in Butler County, shot two turkeys when he only had a permit to shoot one. The report noted, he had a friend along who was hollering and the Governor admitted "I did it." However, as any experienced hunter will tell you (and I hold a legal firearms license myself) : "Never pull the trigger unless you know what you're aiming-at — and be familiar with the law." Gov. Brownback is an attorney by profession.

Granted, on first offenses: sometimes no tickets are issued. To his credit, Brownback confessed to his misdemeanor act and signed a Class C misdemeanor citation. But, as I heard the news article in its entirely: Brownback's first response was to suggest (to his hunting buddy) that they go buy a second-permit to attach to the second dead bird. Brownback's friend told him that is illegal. Brownback is to call Butler County District Court this coming week to learn his exact penalty— which can carry "up to $500 in fines, up to one month in jail, and suspension of his hunting-privileges up to one year." Too often our society resorts to cash as a means of pennance. In Brownback's case — with he, himself, being an attorney (who is supposed to 'know the Law') and this involving negligent use of a firearm; plus his foiled attempt in his initial plot to cover-up the incident by purchasing a phony second permit — smacks of a complete disregard for the law. Brownback said his "not receiving a ticket would reflect badly upon Wildlife and Parks, and upon himself". True. However, his penalty should be more than a monetary-fine. Given his profession of being a lawyer; given the fact as Governor he has a duty to see that the laws are faithfully discharged; and due to his foiled-attempt at a cover-up: Brownback personifies an instance whereby the maximum sentence should be imposed.

Having lived in Butler County for 38 of my 49 years, I don't want to see officials who think they are "above the law". I have met Mr. Brownback in-person. He is a nice man; however he is sworn to uphold the Law. He committed the violations in a flagrant manner — and the Butler County District Court should make him serve the maximum penalties possible.

I agree with the article.  Loss of hunting rights along with a fine should be the end result.

I don't know anything about your governor, but I think he should be punished just the same as any other person who violates the hunting laws.

What's fair for one is fair for all.  Shouldn't make any difference whether someone is governor or works in a factory, etc.  As far as setting an example, sure he should, but if his actions bother enough people they can vote him out.

Governor pay your fine, read the rule book and watch who you hunt with! If you were a Democrat you could let people be killed,(bengazi) export guns to mexico(fast and furious) and not even pay any fines!  :-\

Didn't say if he killed both birds with one shot, or got excited and pulled the trigger twice. Re-read the article and it sounds like he didn't see the second bird in the background. Let him pay a fine and get over it. Looks like somebody is making a mountain out of a molehill. gypsyman

At least he came clean and admitted it.  I know a guy who shot a 6 pt buck about 90 yards from his stand.  He went down to get it and a doe was behind it.  He got two deer with one shot.  Not impossible.  He will not serve jail time, but he will probably have a fine and loose his hunting liscense for one year.  Jail usually comes with the second or third offence since they are overcrowded with drug heads right now.

I have never heard of the Gov. nor do I know anything about him, but it sounds like he screwed up, admitted it,  and is willing to take the consequences. Isn't that how it's all supposed to work?

A number of years ago Wildlife and Fisheries agents found what they believed to be a baited field.  They staked out the field before daylight on the openning day of dove season.  Sure enough, 4 or 5 trucks arrived and 15-20 hunters got out and started shooting doves.  The agents came out of the woods and wrote citations to everyone.  There were several U.S. Congressmen from out of state, a couple of state legislators and a couple of lobbyist (one of whom had provided the hunt.)  It created quite a stink in Baton Rouge for a while. I know one of the state legislators didn't get re-elected.  This was one time that being a "good 'ole boy" wasn't good enough.

Okay, a couple of things. I did not intend the large print is just came out that way. Second, he did try to find a way to weasel out of it at first. Third, it is just kind of him. IMHO he is ruining our state and his popularity rating is now only 34%. He is screwing our disabled, trying to gut our schools and heading the state toward financial disaster with his current economic plans projects a "I have mine, screw you" attitude.

Now I understand.  If you don't agree with his political philosophy then he should be tarred and feathered (with the feathers from the birds he shot) and then nailed to a tree in the town square so everyone can bring their kids down to throw rocks at him.

On the other hand, if his political leanings are the same as yours, then I suppose a small fine or a verbal warning would be sufficient?

    Sounds fair to me!
