Picked up my .45-70 Handi today.
« on: April 16, 2013, 10:15:33 AM »
That makes 3.  I'm sure glad I'm not a Handi-holic like some of you guys. :)  Naturally there is no ammo available so I bought a set of dies, begged 20 cases off my buddy until he picks me up more and asked him to sell me some bullets until I can get my own mold.  I wanted to get a 340 or 405gr Lee bullet mold but seems they are backordered until next month.  Planning on putting a reflex sight on the rifle since it is for my nephews and I to shoot paper and water-filled milk jugs at my backyard range.  I have absolutely no need for this gun but I had to get it. ;D  Anybody got a nice plinking load using the 405gr bullets?  I want to break my nephews in easy before we go to shoulder bruising full power loads.

I'm starting to feel like an orphan.  I'd better get my .45-70 shorty project going so I can at least say I have two. :-[

There's something about the .45-70 I don't get with other calibers.  I don't know....call it comfort.  Pick up a loaded round and it fits you palm.  It FEELS right.  It LOOKS like what it supposed to be and it DOES what you want it to.  I know it's not a "Varmint Rifle", but I shoot a lot of them with it.  Perhaps I'm lucky, but I never had anything I shot move from where the critter and bullet met.  That's everything from crows to deer.

We enjoy 405 gr. with Trail boss loads.... Not sure of the exact recipe here away from my data but it makes for a very pleasant plinking. could shoot it all day and not be sore.   Enjoy it.  thejanitor

To be honest #3 came my way because it was priced right and it had a Royal Laminate stock on it, not because I was looking for another 45-70.
But it just feels right having 3 of them now.  ::)

I guess I'm the odd one in the bunch.  I'm almost salivating at the thought of a scoped .45-70 with a 32" barrel (and maybe a compensator...)  If I were into naming my guns, that one would be tall boy but I'll most likely call them long and short...
