Twist Rate
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:27:05 AM »
Hi Guys...Need some help on a twist rate....I have an Ultra 223, with the second letter of the S/N being a U, which I believe is 2004, should this be a 1 in 12 or 1 in 9 twist rate. I'm going to reload for it, but powder and bullits being hard to find do not want to burn up power trying to see if it needs 55 grain or 68 grain.

Thanks   Phil

The FAQs say it'll be a 1 in 12.  Double check it with a cleaning rod and a tight fitting patch.  I've shot 55 gr. bullets well in both.

If it's the original factory barrel it's 1:12", but it could also be a later accessory barrel which could well be 1:9", if it has a spring ejector it's likely a 1:12", if it's a factory extractor it's more than likely 1:9", as Pete said, checking it with a rod as outlined in the FAQs sticky is the only sure way to find out.  ;)
