Help!
« on: April 17, 2013, 01:21:23 PM »
I am looking to buy a single shot in one of the falling block actions.(Have one on hold now) Hopefully in .243. I seem to remember some issues with this caliber in the Ruger No. 1 line. Is there still a problem with them or did it turn out to be an isolated problem? Does anyone have one and if so what are your experiances? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A friend had a #1 in 243. I shot it with him and found it to be very accurate. If I didn't have a house to pay for, I would buy one.

A friend of mine has two No.1's in .243 -a No.1B and a No.1A.  The "B" is topped with a 4-12X Leupold and is a sub 1" @ 100 yards grouper.  I know, because I've actually shot that one and got groups from 3/4" to just under 1" firing Winchester factory 100 grain ammo out of it.  The "A" is scoped with a 2-7X Leupold and it doesn't seem to be as precise when I've seen my friend shoot it on a couple of occasions. I'd say it was right around the 1" mark, though -some groups a tick tighter, some a tick larger.  Both of my pal's are "Red Pad" rifles, so they're older ones, but I don't know how old they are.  I do know that one would have to be a really picky person to not appreciate how well those rifles shoot with nothing done to them that I know of beyond scope mounting and firing factory ammo.

I think you can buy with confidence, too.

I'm biased, though.  I shoot a 1-B in .30-'06 and the No.1 is my favorite rifle.

Thanks for the responces guys. I decided to go with the Browning. It was a tough decision as the Rugers are beutiful guns as well. The nostalgic look of the Browning just got to me. Once the pennies get piled up again, I would like to fill the big bore slot with a 45-70. Just too many out there.
