How accurate is the 17HMR in a sportster.
« on: February 20, 2004, 02:19:49 PM »
I have read how accurate the 17 is in other bolt guns and such. How accurate is this round in a sportster. Is anyone getting the half inch groups from the sportster. The only rimfires I currently have now is a pistol with 22lr. cylinder and 22mag cylinder and a 60 semi-auto. I am trying to decide between the 17 and 22mag. It will be mostly for plinking and target shooting. :-)

Nightrain;
  I am wondering the same thing, I just sent my Sportster in for the other two barrels (have the .22 mag already).
   Also wonder what brand ammo is most accurate in NEFs....

i have a friend that has  a 17 sporter and he is well under an inch at 100yds.he only has a 3-9 scope on this rifle,if he had more power im sure it would shoot tighter.many of the guys on the old nef talk had good results too with their 17s.

I had a Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5x20x50 on my .17 HMR Sportster. It shoot's best with the Hornadys, next the Remingtons and lastly the CCI's ( :noway: ). I used up the CCI's to help shoot in the barrel. In my gun the CCI's just would not shoot, 1.5 to 2.5" groups at 100 yards. The Hornadys were just sub 1.0" at 100 yards.  I took the scope off and put it on my .223 Handi and put an older 3x9 Bushnell on the .17 HMR for ease in lugging and hunting. The big 6.5x20 was a bit cumbersome on the woods and I have found the 3x9 is fine at my usual woods hunting ranges. I am sure the .17 HMR is capable of .5" groups at 100 yards with a bit of tweaking, good optics, good bench, and most importantly , a good shooter!!!....<><.... :grin:

In my nef .17 ultra varmint. I get 1" groups at 100 yards 1" low at 150 and 1" high at 50.  I am sold ! It also out performs my 22 Mag in the wind.

Train,
  It is more accurate than the .22 Mag on the same rifle. I now have the Sportster with 3 barrels.

   Check out my remarks under my thread ..Well...I finally did it...update.

  It will explain some things

Whitetailer;
   I bought my NEF sportster .22 Mag at a local gun shop, Walmart can probably get it for you for about $120....mine cost a bit more.
   I recently had NEF fit the other two barrels (.22 LR & .17 HRM)
 Both barrels were $138 including shipping back to me...and included a new offset hammer spur for each barrel.
  The .17 is a bull barrel.

I went to Wally World yesterday and they don't have the 17 in their special order book.  The man working the counter called Sports South and they claimed that they haven't had that gun in stock in a long time but that it will be in the 2004 special order catalog for Wal-Mart.  They have the 22LR and 22WMR listed as $103.62 for the Sportster...I was tempted but I think I will hold out for the 17...I already have a Rem 597 22LR...

I finally got my spotting scope, so I took my NEF 17 Sportster to the range to see if I could see those little holes at 100 yards.  I really like my Swift Premier 4-12 scope, but those little holes are just too tough to see at 100 yards with only a 12 power scope.

This is the first time I shot it much at the 100 yard range, and it's only the third box of ammo that I've put through it.  I shot a bunch of groups that were right around an inch using Hornady ammo.  I've heard that with some additional shooting, they may even get a little bettter.

The spotting scope worked great too.  I picked up a Burris 15-45x60mm and I could easily see the holes in my target at 100 yards.

How does dime size groups at 100 yards right out the the box sound! Heck, it was hard for me to believe at first. Was using Hornady rounds. You want be sorry. Had the oppourtunity the either a 17 sportster or savage 93 for the same price. The deciding factor was the trigger. My Sportster has a very sweet, crisp trigger. The savage was way to heavy.

Dime size groups, great shooting Digger. You know I think the lousy heavy triggers as the norm may be a thing of the past. The last 2 NEF's I bought have great triggers and one of my hunting buddies just got a new .22 Mag Sportster and it has a great trigger also. Lets hope some changes have been made on the triggers. Now if we can just get the factory to flush out the chips and debris from the receiver after they finish machining it and before they add the trigger assembly...that would make for a lot of happy end users....<><.... :grin:
