Does anyone know any history?

A friend ran into this little cannon at an estate sale and asked if I knew anything about it.  I come to you to ask for help...  The cannon weighs 2 pounds, has a 30 cal bore.  The breech is 1 1/8" diameter, the barrel itself is 5 1/4" long. The wheels are just under 4" diameter. The tooling appears to be top notch. It is well built and loves to eat crackers. Can anyone help?

I've never seen much detailed info being exchanged between "cannon people" on items like this.  I can't say that no one here will have the info you want, such as ID of the mfgr., but you might also want to find and ask questions of groups who deal with cast iron toys.  One rsn I recommend this is that I suspect cast-iron toy makers often produced many different models and types of toys, which may have included toy cannons.

Thanks Cannonmn.  Your advice makes sense, and I appreciate the steerage.  I will look in that direction.  It is a sweet little piece, and it would be nice to find some history on it for my friend.

The 'work in progress' is 24PDRs, except the one awaiting muzzel shaping which is a 32PDR. They all have 1" bores, are out of 3" stock, measure just over 13" long, and weigh just over 17 pounds each. They all have 'stepped' trunnions, 1 1/4" down to 1" X 1.5" for 1.5" cheeks. The 32PDR is 550.00 and the 24 PDR is 525.00.
 
I notice there are new board members here who may not know it is our policy to pay for insured shipping for all GBO registered members in the US. We have been doing this for years.
 
Two of these 24PDRs have won spots on the GBO Calender on carriages made by GBO members. I think the first one was May 2007.

We call this ZULUized! For museum quality, this package can't be beat. There is often a barrel on its way to Texas or a carriage on its way to Michigan.

Looks like the ones that use carbide to fire. They were in magazines from time to time.
