12" 45 / 70

Wondering what kind of speed you guys are getting from a 12" contender-hunter ported barrel in 45 70?
Is 1500 fps with a 350gr GC boolit reasonable?

My Lyman manual uses the 14" barrel for their loads, and they don't show the pressures for their contender loads either.

You may want to try some cowboy loads.  Not scientific, but when we were shooting a BFR in 45-70 we were shooting the 405 cowboy loads that are a pussy cat in the rifles and they were stout, we then tried the 300 grain bullets that are warm in the little rifles.  And they were nothing out of the handgun but threw a huge flame as most of the powder was burning out of the end of the barrel.
You may want to look at loadings for the 45-70 that use fast powders like Black powder equals.  Explosive vs Propellant.  and combusts quickly in your 12" barel while many powders and loading are for the 20" carbine / rifle barrels.

I read you reply Hank, thanks.

I have some loads made with H322 for the 360gr GC boolits. Powder weight starting at 39gr and going up to 46.5gr in 1/2 gr increments. I also went with 1.5gr to 1gr of Dacron filler as needed.

Just need to grab the chrony and hit the range. It'll be the first time shooting the little 4.5lb contender carbine. Looking forward to the fireball, lol.
