I haven't given this a full minute of thought yet, however my first question would have to be "Would such a check have prevented the sale of black powder to the Boston Marathon Bombers?"

They don't even know the difference between Black Powder and Smokeless Gunpowder. All they care about is a power grab. They want as much control and knowledge of the people that they can have.  Its just like the bill that was just defeated. They keep trying to make the sheeple think that you can just walk into the gas station and buy a gun. They keep saying we need background checks to buy guns.  We already have them. But non gun owners don't know that.  So they push the bill forward telling people its just background checks. But there are other parts of the bill they are not talking about in the press conferences.  Parts that take rights from citizens.  EVEN IF YOU ARE JUST INTO CANNONS AND NOT GUNS. THESE BILLS STILL EFFECT YOU AND YOUR CHILDRENS RIGHTS AND ONCE THEY CAN TRAMPLE THE CONSTITUTION ONCE THEY WILL KEEP DOING IT.

Its not like you can just buy blackpowder. You still have to sign a waiver and present a license.  I also build AKs for a hobby and this gun control chest beating has priced me out of that hobby. I now fear that my fall back cannon hobby is at risk of being nothing but paper weights when they get done taxing and restricting Black Powder.

Fortunately, bp is a relatively simple mixture of 75:15:10 potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulfur.

Like most things, the "lawmakers" are seriously out of touch with "We the People". Black Powder shooting, whether cannons, muzzle loaders, etc, is just an extention of the Second Amendment and our rights to own and use these articles. As far as restricting our use, like bluelake said, it's easy to make, but a bit more difficult to make with consistancy! We can take a "Wait and see" attitude, but I'll start here on the local level by reading the local and state laws regarding the use of this item. BATF&E might supercede the local laws, but we need to know that for sure. A "knee jerk" reaction isn't going to help anyone, but like the guns issue, and the Mining Rights out here in Oregon, things do have a starting point, and this Lautenberg proposal bears keeping a close eye on.
"Beware the Enemy With-in, for these are perilous times! Those who promise to protect and defend our Constitution, but do neither, should be evicted from public office in disgrace!

Lautenberg is just as bad as Schumer and Feinstein.  Another senator for life-type.  He needs to be retired.

In all seriousness, I think background checks should be conducted on everyone who wants to buy a pressure-cooker.  Pressure-cookers with a capacity of over four quarts (a.k.a. "assault pressure cookers") should be banned in the U.S.

We really need registeration of pressure cookers, or better yet, Mrs America, turn them in, every last one.  Purchasers of high cap pressure cookers should be turned in to the FBI.

Imagine the fit the farm lobby would throw if they had to have a background check on fertilizer that contains ammonium nitrate.

I propose background checks on our congress people and senators. What are there motives, intentions and how long are they going to stick around? Will there agenda be that of the people they represent or their own?

Amen, DD, I am retired from a chemical plant that manufactures the purist R-grade amonia in the world (Cherokee Nitrogen,(LSB), Cherokee, Alabama) (USW Journeyman Machinist). They also process amonia prills ( the stuff used in the Oklahoma bombing). Farmers buy it by the eighteen wheeler load without much fuss now, I could only imagine the uproar from the farm lobby if restrictions got tighter ! ! !

Just suppose that background checks for pressure cookers or powder or ball bearings had been in place before the Marathon Bombing, how would have it contributed to finding the perp's?  I don't suppose it was illegal for them to have purchased any of that stuff, so they would not have been stopped.  After the fact, the list of purchasers of such items within 500 miles would have had to be examined and each person on the list investigated.  That investigation may have been completed a month or two after the perp's had been found through other means.

Just another politician looking for a presence in the news reports.  Bad news is better than no news.

All kidding aside.  The FBI KNEW about these guys, especially the oldest.  They were warned by the Russians.  All they had to do was keep closer tabs on them, and even followed them around before the Boston Marathon, knowing these types of events drawing crowds is what a terroist wants.  Instead they are too busy being worried about us average joes just trying to enjoy our 2nd Ammendment RIGHTS.

You guys need to watch the first two movies of Atlas Shrugged, about the downfall of America due to EXTREME socialism.  The third and final movie will be out this summer.  They are based on the book "The Road to Serfdom".  Remember Obama is a socialist-communist.  He sent NO ONE to Margaret Thachers funeral, but sent high level people to Hugo Chavez's funeral.

Just heard on the news it was fireworks components which would make it more likely flash powder (potassium perchlorate and powdered aluminum).  In any event, not black powder, not that whoever is pushing for control of BP would know or care to know the difference.  Maybe BP just looks scary, because you know its a shiny black rather than sparkly silver color.  It must be more dangerous!

I'm not so sure I can draw the same conclusion from the news reports.  What the older brother bought at the Phantom FW outlet in NH was a do-it-yourself kit of aerial shells and launch tubes in a two-for-one price deal.  They would contain both a lift charge of BP and shells which contain various things.  Someone with more knowledge of fireworks, help me here, but for legal sale to non-licensees in the US a single firework can s contain only a very small amount of pyro powder aka flash powder, about as much is in a 1.5" firecracker.  The bomber only got two of the kits on that trip, total flashpowder far less than whatever was in his three devices.   Jury is still out, at least in public forums,  on the exact contents IMO.

I can only guess the people who believe background checks are worth anything do not understand that the criminal element does not walk into a local gun store (or even a local gun show) and pay list price for a new gun.  They source their fire power from fellow criminals who have no connection to the FBI or ATF background checking procedures.

Now either they know that and are really stupid, or they know that and are really interested in controlling non-criminals instead of criminals.
