What do you feed your MarkII?
« on: February 20, 2004, 06:04:36 PM »
When I first got my MarkII slabside, other MarkII owners in my club recommended that I use CCI Blazer ammo b/c it was very reliable (and cheap).   I went through several bricks of it and it did cycle well for me.

Some time went by in that I didn't use the MarkII much, then when I went for more Blazers, I found they were no longer in production.  The gun shop help then recommended CCI Standard Velocity.  I bought a brick b/c I also shoot the SVs in my 77/22, but he SVs have been nothing but trouble out of the MarkII.

I got out tonight to do a little shooting and was having problems cycling the SV and a friend let me try some Remington target ammo.  This ammo cycled very well.

What ammo works best in your MarkII?

Federal American Eagle and CCI Mini-Mags. I have shot thousands of the Federal American Eagles. They just function flawless. :)

DTH:

CCI Blazers out of production...?  I just bought three bricks the other day for $7.95 each for my wife to run through my Govt. Model.  A local sporting goods store has been running an add in the paper, every week, for over a year now at this price.  Hmm?   :?

The ONLY rounds that won't consistantly run through my Rugers, are the Federal hollow-point "picnic shells", that I used to by from WM in the milk cartons.  Not only did I have cycling problems, but I ran into dozens of "duds" and one squib   .

Once I got serious about target shooting, I switched to Wolfe and Winchester T22 exclusively...but any target-grade ammo I have ever tried cycles well through my Rugers.

Anyway, if you can't find any more Blazers in your area...try the Remington "goldens" or even the Winchester bulk packs.  They're inexpensive and will undoutedly perform as well as the Blazers.

Good Luck & Be Safe!   ...Chris   :D

My Mark I eats anykind of ammo brands. Nice pistol. Just like a Luger. Like it a lot. Now I'm in the mood to go shot some cans with it.

Chris,

I just looked at CCI's website and they still list the Blazers.   I just need to find someone that carries them.  Not sure why the other store quit handling them, I was just there last weekend and they didn't have them.  $7.95 a box is a great price!

Your right...$7.95 a brick seems unbelieveable nowadays.  I promise you, I paid way-more for .22 shells 30 years ago...then I do today.  Heck, I pay more for a 500 count tin of .177 pellets, than I do for a brick of CCI Blazers.  Either CCI is losing they're hind-quarters on .22 shells or Dynamit-Noble is making a killing on pellets...my guess is both are making good money!

Come to think about it, I also pay more for a six pack of Coke than I do for a six pack of beer.   What a country!!!   :)
Cheers!   :toast:

I just tried some of a new brick of PMC standard velocity match "Scoremaster".  The new primers faked me out at first.  Smelled like paint thinner    Results?  Accurate, reliable, and CLEAN.  Unlike other brands that blackened the casings (and fouled chambers) or left lots of powder residue in the barrel, The PMC left the barrel looking good.  I did have a couple of rounds that didn't eject properly (out of 100).  However, I haven't taken the bolt out for a while to clean and lube.  My old Mk I gave me no problems on takedown, my MK II is a bear.  Everything is SO tight including the pin into the receiver that I need a dummy pin that I can insert from the outside to assure alignment. I use a nylon 1/4-20 bolt as a drift to hammer the pin down and out.

I am aligned with Redhawk1 on this issue. Federal American Eagle hps have never failed to perform in my Mark II. They are very accurate and reliable. And cheap to! :-)

DTH,
I've tried several brands in my MK II and found CCI Pistol Match to shoot the best.  Winchester Power Point also shoots well in mine.  I now have a 5 1/2 bull barrel.  However when I had a slabside I found the same two types shot the best in it as well.

I like the Federal bulk pack.  At WalMart it is in qty.  of 550 for $8-9.

I have scored as high as 99 with this ammo at bulleye.

Another is Aguilla (spelling) pistol match, this is great stuff.  Eley primers are used in it as well.  I have found it for 2.05-2.25 a box(50) at Natchezs.

Of course there is Eley...but $$$$!  Too expensive for me.

Love my Ruger Mark II gov target modle.

I prefer Winchester SuperX 37gr @ 17 bucks a brick or either Aguila 30gr that HappyHunter refered to.

Aguila 22 ammo is one of the 3 brands that Freedom Arms uses to shoot in their modle 97 before it leaves the factory. The other two are GreenTag and Laupa standard match.

CCI pistol Match are most accurate in the Mark 2 and Smith Model 41 for me. RWS used to make a pistol match variation and it was really good but pretty steep cost. They now only make a rifle match but isnt quite as accurate for me.

Ive had very good luck with Federal Lightning, it feeds well, shoots clean and groups very well for me.  I use a lot of match = high price ammo in other toys but the MKII likes this and at .99 per 50 I like it too.

:cb2: Mine would only shoot Blazers reliably, and unfortunately, Blazers are hard to get in my neighborhood for some reason. My 4" Bull Barrel Mark II would jam once a magazine on almost everything else, especially on Remington and Winchester ammo (Winchester Xpert .22 HPs were the worst!). Finally got mad enought to trade it for a 4" SP101. Good old wheelgun shoots EVERYTHING you put in it.

These new fangled automatic pistols are just a fad. They'll never last!  :)
