Hallucination? Wood ducks.

I was driving home yesterday and saw a group of about 50 male wood ducks standing on the ice in a pond. I thought I had a pretty good look at them, and didn't see any females. I didn't know they were ever in groups that big, and only males.
 
I can hardly believe I saw that.
 
Have you ever heard of such a thing in wood ducks?

It was! It certainly got my attention. I was in traffic, and it was moving pretty slow, but had to keep moving. I did get a good look at them. I always thought they traveled in pairs or similar small groups.

The subdivision we live in has a "duck pond" and a walking trail/park. The better half and I drove passed it about 2 weeks ago and there were probably 50 male wood ducks on the pond. I made mention to her about it that I had never seen that many-ever. I thought it was strange myself but maybe it isn't after all. I need to start carrying a camera for occasions like that.

I have hunted them for years in the early morning in a good swamp a hundred or more will fly over in a very short time.

wow! learn sumpthin new every day.im not a duck hunter by any means but in all my years of hunting and roaming the creeks and ponds,i dont think ive ever seen more than 4 wood ducks in a group and that was 2 pair of males and females.
 
 i killed one drake when i was a kid and i decided right then and there id never again kill such a pretty bird for its meat.they are very rare here and i just enjoy seeing them.if you want to hunt them it doesnt bother me a bit.i just love looking at them.
