The shoulder is 1mm longer in the 7-08 than the 308

the difference in length of the shoulder is .04 , from base to start of shoulder is the same for both rounds . but the oal of the 308 is longer . trust me a 708 will chamber and fire in a 308 . Easiest way to fire form already loaded ammo. I know why do that ? I had about 100, 708 rounds and no gun To use them in or use the bullets . AND I do not suggest anyone try this.

as you know the two cartridges are as alike as two white pickets in a fence. Nothing gained by getting 7mm08, other than a new rifle.

           I consider the 7/08 to be closer ballistically to the .270 than the .308..   That being said..you don't NEED a new rifle..but how many times did I not NEED a new rifle..other than to fill that empty slot in the locker.. ;) ;D ;D
  Between the Axis and the new Ruger American..both are excellent guns.  Hardly anyone doubts the accuracy of Savage guns and although some have doubted Ruger over the years, the American seems to be another story.  I found this with the new American .308 I bought last fall and if you scour the web you will find most all reviews positive toward it's accuracy..and the marksman trigger is gratis..  I like the light weight for a woods walking gun...and the nice buck I got with it, first day of last season.

Have a granddaughter that has a 7mm-08 in a re-bored Ruger RSI.  I have done a little reloading for her and it is an easy round to load for as the 308 is.  Recoil is not bad.  But she is not recoil sensitive having watched her crank off a 30-06 a few times.
 
Either rounds is good.

HA! the sad point is that there is no empty slot!  :o  I am trying to give em all away to sons, son inlaws, and grandsons to make room so I can get more. uuahhhaaaa!(manical laugh) I just want a different gun and caliber that I dont know nuttin about!   :D
 
Now all that being said NO PM's about giving or selling no guns. The last time I joked about my 17's I cudda sold 7 of them via pm.  8)
