550cz - 416 rigby
« on: April 25, 2013, 05:20:07 AM »
The dangerous game population is way down in NW Ohio, but I had to buy a used 416 Rigby anyway.  I just read sourdough's thread on his 375 H&H Mag. I calculated the max. Hodgdon book load with a 300 grainer in the 375 H&R and 9.25# gun at almost 40 ft-lbs of recoil.  A max. 400 grainer in the rigby with the same weight gun is over 65 ft-lbs.  I weigh 50 pounds less than Roger.   Gonna be a fun time at the range tomorrow, but I am going to cheat a bit and just shoot it with iron sights. ;D

Keep loading it up and pretty soon you may begin to notice that recoil...  ::)

Cast your own bullets and turn it into a plinker at about 1800fps for shooting fun.  RCBS makes a 416 gas check mold.  I bet a lfn from lbt would make that a spectacular deer/bear whacker!

Full power loads are a hoot to shoot but you won't burn up a couple of boxes of factory ammo at one sitting and still have any money left in your wallet!  40 rounds of factory ammo or full power reloads through that and you won't even want to shoot your 22 for a while ;)

Those big bore cartridges give the other shooters at the range something to talk about too ;D

Congratulations on your new purchase!

bulletstuffer,

THe rifle came with 15 rounds of factory 400g Federal Solids, that are going bye-bye in the morning if my son & I can hold out for that many shots.  Gun also came with 39 1xNorma brass & I already ordered a die set and some Barnes 300g TSXs to play with while I decide which mold to buy.  I have trained for shooting this rifle with my 45-120 launching 45 cal projecticles well in excess of 458WM velocity.   The CZ is a bit lighter than my 45-120 and I like the look and feel of the Safari stock but I have never shot a gun with this style stock.  Can't wait to light off a round. 8)

One range trip and I am sold on this rifle, so it is a keeper for me.  Very nice trigger and the smoothest bolt I have ever operated.   With the leaf sights at 60 yards I can hit a 2" orange dot offhand with the federal DGS ammo.   The recoil is there but nothing worse than some of the deer slugs or 458 caliber bullets I have launched.  The safari style stock with cheek piece fits me well and doesn't slap me in the face like the monto carlo stocks I have owned.

My kid took video of me shooting clay pidgeons on the berm and said he would post it on u tube or FB.  By the look on my wife's face watching me shoot I don't think I will watch the video.

416 Rigby,so much better than the Remmy 416. Much lower pressure, and the 550 is just perfect for the 416 size wise,I have the 550 in 375,but it is just too big for the round. prefer my Interarms Whitworth for that.

big bores are fun.  I wanna find a cz 416 that somebody buys and shoots once and decides they gotta get rid of that mule and let it go cheap.  Then I can send it to wayne at AHR and get it pimped out into the perfect dangerous game rifle.  As far as recoil,  I have never shot anything that kicks as hard as my synthetic stocked H&R 12 with 24" 3.5" barrel.  It weighs about 5 pounds and with 00 buck 3.5" it will make you think about ever wanting to shoot it again

gotta agree with you on the recoil of a lightweight 3.5" 12ga. I bought Pardner for the stock set and sold the barrel, got the barrel back and sold it again and never I even thought about putting a 3.5" shell in it.

A Great purchase,
The Hog back stock is designed for open sights, and recoil is diminished by the gun rising up. Keep your elbow high and make a good pocket for the stock. I shoot reduced loads for plinking, ten grains less than factory.

Trail Boss powder works well in a 416, no recoil at all. The most important thing is to keep shooting it.

On of the local gun shops has one of the these CZ rifles in .375 H&H.  If it wasn't almost 900 bux, I'd be seriously temped.  I'm planning to unload some of my motorcycle stuff soon, maybe if it's still there...

Tony, do you have an H&R in 500S&W?
Of course you could use an Ultra Slug Hunter rifled heavy 12ga. to make 'gauge rifle loads' for way big bore and kickin' fun  :o on the cheap and just bypass all those 'little guns'.

Jason, the Lott is a varmint rifle, if you want a big bore CZ get the 505 gibbs or better yet I know where there is one in 600 overkill. ::)

The 416 caliber guns have several advantages, I load my 416 ruger to 2150 fps with a 400 grain bullet and get easy recoil in a short rifle. This light load easily matches the power of a 375 H&H, and it can still be loaded higher.

The Rigby cartridge is quite versatile, it can be loaded to close to 416 weatherby ballistics and loaded down to
45-70 ballistics. I am sure the owners of the 45 caliber guns can do the same, and the 375 guns are likewise able to be custom loaded.

I own the two 416 rifles so I will only comment on them.

phoneman,

I loaded some reduced rounds with cast and 5744 to try in the Rigby.  Not for me but to let my wife and the kid who mows my grass shoot the rifle.  BTW, the CZ550 bug bite me again, there is a 375 H&H headed my way. 8)
