I can't comment much on the carbon bushmaster model, just hearsay. I've never heard of one being a piece of junk. I have heard a lot of folks complaining because it doesn't have a dust shield or forward assist. The folks that bash it the most say it's more likely to get dust in it without the cover, so it needs a forward assist. Never owned one personally, so I can't give my own oppinion.
I do have a few new frontier armory lowers. newfrontierarmory.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=245_285&products_id=34089
It is pretty tough. I've seen videos were they run it over with a truck without damage. It shoots afterwards. I tried to look for the video but couldn't find it. I think the triggers are 4 or 5 lbs. They feel much better than a run of the mill BM, S&W or the like factory trigger. They are plastic as well, so it's surprising they feel so good. A jp spring kit and a dremel will get them down to 2 or 3 lbs.
The 7 oz savings is quite a bit. If you go with a light weight optic like an aimpoint then it's still a hair lighter than a normal iron sight rifle that's naked. Since you are still using an aluminum upper there isn't worry of pressure with a bigger caliber (I don't know if there is or not with a carbon 15). I've never priced the carbon 15 but assuming a complete nfa lower and a decent quality cheap complete upper would come in a little cheaper than a carbon 15.
