Wind tripped me up.
« on: April 25, 2013, 05:44:10 PM »
I was out this afternoon looking for Nuisance Beaver, so I was carrying my .17HMR Sportster.  I was driving along the overflow channel of the Flood Project.  I have a permit to shoot them there, and in the park.

A Coyote came running from down near the water, and disappeared as it turn to come up the slope.  I stopped and got out of the truck.  As the Coyote topped the rise, and came into view, I squealed like a Rabbit.  Coyote stopped and looked around.  I was lying across the hood, and took a 100 yard shot.  I had not noticed the wind coming from left to right.  Pretty still wind too, but at 100 yards I was not expecting to be affected.  I hit it in the hind quarter, I was in shock.  I quickly reloaded, while the Coyote was spinning in circles.  The Coyote lined out running back down the slope and went out of sight.  I next saw it running along the water.  I made a shot holding about a 12 " lead.  Distance was now about 130 yards.  Wind was directly behind me.  Coyote rolled, I had hit it in the spine, just behind the shoulders.  While it could not get up, it was still very much alive.  .22 Pistol finished it off.

After I got it to the truck I measured the first hit from where I was aiming.  10.5 inches off due to wind drift, at 100 yards.  I'm still in shock, I never realized the wind could affect the .17gr bullet that much at 100 yards.  Speer TNT bullet made a mess of the intestines, but this Coyote was able to go a long way if it had gotten away.  The bullet did not break any bones in the spine, the shock must have done some damage since it could not get up or use it's rear legs..  This is the first time I have shot the HMR in the wind.  We seldom get wind here in the Tanana Valley.  It's also the first time I have shot anything but Beaver,  Foxes, and squirrels with it.  Think I'll go back to carrying the .223 out there.

Something similar happened to me one night with a red fox in Central Texas. After that I only used the 17 hmr for smaller game. MY 17 mach II will hit anything out to 100 yds. but I wouldn't in all honesty shoot anything but a squirrel or rabbit size animal with it.

At my club there is always a cross wind or a changing wind.  I'm not surprised by your experience, I've had 22 hornets move 3-5 inches at 50 yards with small wind gusts.  I don't own a 17 caliber, I just never believed they could be trusted if the wind is swirling.  There just isn't enough mass to the bullet.

My neighbor was shooting his .338 Ultra Mag on the bench beside me later today.  The wind only affected him about a half inch.  I tried my 30-06 as well, about 3/4".  Got the .17 HMR out and still 10" wind drift.

That is exactly why I have never been able to talk myself into a .17  ;)

We have to deal with high winds out here in W. Texas.  I never shoot less than a 6mm up to .30 cal.

You know the wind is a bummer for the little .17 mach II, but man that is a flat shootin little stinger. You wont find a 22 LR that will shoot at 100 yds without a 7 inch hold over. Its like everything else you just have to know its limitations especially game size.

I know you've posted before about reduced loads for arctic fox in .223, which I'm guessing was for very short range.  I wonder how those loads or a little faster ones compare wind wise to the 17 HMR?

We don't save pelts here, so I never shoot with less than a 6mm.....sometimes .30 cals.

FPH I have a 1970's Remington 700  6mm varmit special. LOve that rifle unless I have to carry it far. It shoots minute of nats ass! way better than I can see these days.  I have taken everything from deer to road runners with that piece. A 85 gr BTHP makes some nasty holes at 200 yds.

the reason I shoot the .17s if for pelts.  A .223 will blow a fox in half.  Like I said before we seldom get wind here, so it normally is not a problem.

I have an early 70s 700 BDL.  Very accurate. Yours like flat based or BT bullets.  Mine likes under 90 gr. I need powder to rediscover my pet load.

Everything that goes down the pipe does well, in fact, store bought hornady 95 gr ballistic tip is remarkable. But, the BT hp(85) is perfection. 38 gr of varget sped it down range well.

Thanks for the tip.  Along with my powder my personal notes on loads are gone too.  That's why I bug you guys about loads.  I'll try your load  out.  I use to have a one hole 87 gr. load.
