Morels Anyone?
« on: April 26, 2013, 03:08:15 AM »
Spring is here and with April showers Morel Mushrooms are popping up. I went out yesterday and found half a shopping bag full in about 30 minutes of looking. Anyone else taking advantage of Nature's harvest?

Now you've gone and done it ;) Making me wish I was back in the Ozark area in the spring time. There is NO other mushroom in the class of a Morel. They tell me we have them here in Oregon, but I haven't been able to locate them.I do my harvesting for Shaggy Manes and others in the fall.

We need a few more warm days.  This morning was the first without a hard frost.  Hopefully they will be out here soon.

Lucky you - they are the BEST!

Still waiting for the last of the snow to melt here.  May be popping up in another week or two (hope).

Enjoy the bounty!

It rained here yesterday and tomorrow is the start of our spring gobbler season .I'll be looking for both . Morels are the best tasting mushrooms on earth. Morels and spring gobbler is a feast fit for kings.

Morels: Do you find them just under pine trees? I have never found one.
-
Just started looking a couple of years ago. I have found one hen of the woods and one oyster mushroom in the past but no one to verify so I didn't eat them. Think I have seen many sulfur shelf but not sure.ear

Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

We have an abundance of them here. I live in the Missouri Ozarks about 35 miles from the Arkansas line. You get in a good spot you can realy clean up. Generaly when you find one others are close by. We find them on South facing slopes with old growth Oaks. Around Cherry and Apple trees are good places to look too. Where you find old stumps, down trees and dead trees still standing are good places to look. Look for standing dead trees with the bark peeling off. I walk slowly and scan the forest floor closely. When I find one I start circling around it looking for more. Take a step or two, look all around, then another step or two till I'm sure there's no more in that area and then move slowly on till I find another spot. They pop up right after a rain. My son and I both scored nice turkeys so we'll be eating fesh turkey breasts, injected with Cajun Butter & Herb marinade,  then rubbed with Cajun seasoning and smoked in our smoker. We'll have fresh Morels on the side along with wild rice. Ya just can't beat Mother Natures bount!. :) Wishing you good hunting guys. Hope ya find some.

You're quite welcome. I hope it helps. They also prefer moist sandy soil or so I've read. I agree with the moist part anyways. :)

I was just reading an article that said if you find morels chances are that ramps are growing nearby. How to you prepare the morels?

Back in my DJ day's in NW Arkansas (Fayetteville) I had a friend who could find them when no one else could. :o The right kind of friend indeed ;) He kept me in Mushrooms and I supplied him with Country Music 45 RPM's. Good trade off I thought. Once in a while, he would come in with a monster Morel. He told me a story about the biggest Morel he ever found..........Said it took him an hour to cut through it with his chain saw, and when it fell, a Sow and three pigs ran out from under it. ::) Who was I to doubt him? ;)

Morels are sliced in 1/2 lengthwise then covered with salted water and left overnight, or at least long enough to kill the bugs. Rinse and drain on paper, then roll around in flour and fried in hot grease til crispy, but not overcooked. Drain well, we use old newspapers. Salt and pepper to taste. Our favorite way to eat them is on buttered bread, a mushroom sandwich. Great eaten by themselves too. Some folks make a batter for them, but we don't care for that near as much.
I know where they are but my health won't allow me to get to them anymore. Wish I had a 4 wheeler. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I tried hunting morels and quickly discovered that it cuts into my trout fishing. Gave up on the morels promptly, abruptly, instantly, and in two shakes of a lamb's tail once I realized that.

Morels are much better eating than trout and I love to eat trout! To the shegrin of you C&R fly fishermen... I  am more of a worm soaker, letting the trout swallow the hook so I know it will be landed for the frying pan.  Come to think of it, a nice fat rainbow or brookie next to a plate full of flour coated morels fried in butter! Now that is a meal!!!!

Morels should be popping up any day now here in Wisconsin, looking forward to my first platter full!!!
