Seems the Westboro Baptist went to West, Texas to protest the burial of the responders that were killed in the explosion. The Sherrif throwed em in jail. They said he couln't do that, he said watch and told em he could keep em for 24 hours without charges being filed.

Does this mean it's okay to be thrown in jail by LE, when they've no intention of charging you with a crime, but just want to screw you over and show who's boss?

Down here in Texas we have a saying- Don't mess with Texas. They were warned, they didn't pay attention, they paid the price. So yeah, you come down here to screw up things, you get a free lunch and supper on the Happy Citizens of Texas. Like we natives say- don't like it, take the first interstate in any direction and don't bother comin' back. I can assure you nobody here will miss them or their lack of respect for the dead. Yeah, it's different here.

Yeppers! And creme puff, just so you know, there's some fine fellows waiting for those Westboro misfits in county jail, the booty-bandit for one, among others. Also, those Westboro morons won't get flowers in the morning as they exit jail.  More as like, they will get escorted to the county line with instrucions to not stop until they are over the state line.
Don't mess with Texas!  Don't even think about it, because we have something for agitators and they won't like it!

I find no links, or local news that he actually jailed anyone, but he did tell Westboro that he WOULD jail them. If anyone has anything different I'd like to see it. Our local news would have been on it "like a duck on june bug", but I haven't heard a thing.
I got several notices on the North Texas Patriot Riders Calender of the Memorial Services, and funeral services. Their protest was never gonna be seen or heard by the families anyway. HOWEVER, that Sheriff will never have to RUN for re-election again down here. He will have the job for as long as he wants it, and HEY! Wanna protest the Sheriff? I'm sure myself and a few hundred other bikers MIGHT wanna show up for that one two. Speakin for myself of course.
If anyone doesn't like that, then stay the hell out of Texas. We will not miss you.

DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS, "IS" ABOUT THROWIN TRASH OUT OF YOUR CAR. THE TRASH SHOULD STAY IN THEIR CARS AND KEEP GOIN. THE TRASH WILL GET "PICKED UP". LMAO!

So to that Sheriff, I say: EXCELLNT DECISION! We're behind you as "FELLOW TEXANS" all the way.

But on topic, folks... so, maybe the Sheriff did not actually jail the Westboro Gang without charge, as implied by thread? Good... I'd like to think that a sheriff - even on in Tejas - is more professional than that, even when backed up by a posse of jacket-wearin' Christian Bikers!

Sorry if I misspoke! it was told to me by my Lovely Wife who rarely gives me bad information. She saw it on Facebook and took for face value. but they were warned that he would and stayed away, which is all that was important.

Not sure, but you may can be detained without being charged, for a while. Needless to say he would have and to his credit, They went away like they should have. Maybe it will be an omen and a way to stop them from making a mockery of future funerals of heroes.

Oldshooter, I think some mistake their RIGHT TO DO, with IS IT RIGHT to do it? With the Sheriff's promise being made "while exercising common sense", it escapes some that, their "right to do" is "not always right to do it", and of course the "common sense" issue is at a complete loss in their case.
I worried much about such a protest should the "unimaginable" had happened on my youngest son's three deployments. I considered that should someone protest my own son's there would be additional funerals to follow shortly thereafter. Civilized? No. Christian? No. Possible? We'll never know, but know one will disrespect my family in such an hour, or otherwise, without dire consquences.
Some things are just not done in my part of the world without a price.

Well said, and I agree with the disrespect thing, where my family is concerned. Like I have always said, they would then know why they are afraid of the dark.

Not just any dead people SharonAnne. Soldiers, police officers, firemen, and paramedics. Their choosie about whom they protest. And the answer to your question is: Because no one has handed them their butts yet. But somewhere, sometime, somebody will. Their a bunch of religious fanatics that are way overdue.

Hard to say. They came here to Raleigh to protest Elizabeth Edwards' funeral, with placard about how she was going to hell for loving gay people, or somesuch. I blocked 'em, along with a bunch of other folks. We couldn't let the world think that theirs (Westboro gang's) behavior was specific to Christians (though sadly, there are a LOT of Christians who seem to agree with them on their nasty view towards gay people).

Guess they're mad at soldiers, too...

How are these folks allowed to call themselves "Baptists?" Can you just start a church and call yourselves anything you like? Or are they sanctioned by some Baptist Convention? I've been a Baptist all my life and never heard or dreamed of such goings-on endorsed by the Church!

Duke, anyone can call themselves 'Baptists'. And a good many Baptists are of the 'independent' variety, meaning... there're not part of some larger body, and therefore on their own, and can make it up as they go.

and they (these independent Baptists, of various stripes) often think of themselves as the faithful remnant, while the rest of the church goes to hell. imagine that.

Probably just as well they were not jailed. Like em or not a couple of them are pretty fair lawyers and just wait to be wronged so they can sue and get more publicity. If there was just some way to totally ignore the scum they might crawl back under the rock they came from.

They are a political action group that hides behind the tax exempt status of a so-called church.

If they spent time reading the Bible instead of protesting, they would see thier actions show themselves up to be nothing but gay-bashing political types with a hate filled agenda.

They hide behind the constitution and the very freedoms they enjoy, but hate the very men and women who provide it; by using the funerals as a showcase.

Westbrook can suck it.

I am glad to hear they were not jailed. This caused a bit of a personal dilemna for me. When I first read the first post of this thread I had mixed feelings. On one I hand I would love to see those hate filled people muzzled. On the other hand jailing and holding them with no charges would set a dangerous precedent. What happens when you get a liberal democrat sherrif and you want to exercise your First Amendment rights on a subject that is contrary to his beliefs, like say the Second Amendment? He doesnt want to hear it and he throws you in jail and holds you on no charge. A dangerous precedent indeed.
