Spring Harvest
« on: April 27, 2013, 04:27:57 PM »
Off to Renegade Ranch near Cheboygan Michigan tomorrow to hunt bison. I have my heart set of a two year old bull. I worked up a lead bullet load for my Zastava 458. Once he's down I will be helping gut, skin, and quarter him to get ready for the meat cutters. I be back with pics and a story!

My wife and I got the lay of the land the night before. After a late breakfast the owner of the ranch and I started to move with the herd to try to sort out the bull I wanted. After a bit a clear shot presented itself and I took the shot.

It went through both lungs, just behind the shoulder. I had been working up a458 Winchester Magnum cast bullet load just for this occasion.  The herd got protective and a pickup, and end-loader and the Polaris 4x4 was needed to drive them away. The massive herd bull was particularly aggressive!
I endend up with a 2 1/2 year old bull at about 850 lbs. After we got it gutted, I stuck with the guide, and helped skin and quarter it and get it into the walk in cooler. The next morning we got the quarters to the meat cutters.

It was a very enjoyable hunt! The challenge wasn't fast pace or running, but rather steeling my nerves for the 5 second shot opportunity, and keeping an eye out for charging herd members.

Thanks! No I'm not gettiing him mounted. The spring hair slip is like a pooch shedding. I think I will let my photos be my trophy. I cut off the horns. I might make some nice powder horns.  I sawed off the hooves for a young hunter to explore.

Doug, I don't know about freeezer space... an 850-900 lb. Bull yielded 350 of hanging quarters. Judging from the inside tenderloins we cooked already he's gonna be tender!  I will let you know if he fits into the upright freezer we have waiting for him!  8)
