.458 cast bullet problem. (45-70)
« on: April 27, 2013, 06:24:57 PM »
Hi folks,
Got a proplemo hoping you all can help with. When seating a .458 cast bullet, the case mouth expands too much. The case hangs up and stops about 3/8" short of chambering.  :-[   It expands that slight taper in the case. How can I correct this?  No powder or primer yet; just trying to dial in the OAL first, but it won't chamber.    ???  Any info appreciated. Thanks!

If you didn't crimp it in place, that might help, but besides that, I have taken my full length sizer die and pulled the primer rod out of it and used it to smooth some case bulging.  Works more like a taper die, but I'd think if you get your crimping working with either the bullet seating die or with a Lee FCD die, it will take care of that issue.

What weight and type of bullet are you using? What OAL are you seating them to? What gun are you using? Is there rifling marks on the bullet when you take it out of the chamber?

Thanks Tacklebury,
I get what you're saying. I'll try it.

I didn't want to crimp, and wanted to slowly adjust the seater die down until the bullet was just off the lands.

On paper, the binding makes sense I guess: the bullet plus the case wall getting too wide.

I don't know how others have no issue chambering a round with a .460 bullet, fairly loose, un crimped. ???

What rifle are you trying these in. There are some like the Shiloh's and Winchester bpcr that may not take a .460 diameter bullet.
Also make sure don't have the seating die set to short and the seating stem out to far, so that its trying to crimp before you get the bullet seated.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Bersa, thanks.
Just a 300 gr cast flat point. I want to seat them out near the standard 2.5 OAL, but even at 2.4 OAL , it sticks. I can't get it anywhere near the rifling. Gun is a H&R Buffalo Classic.

Ranch, thanks.
Yes, it's not. It's more than a full turn out, but I will recheck anyway.

Suart who made this 300gr bullet.  Suspicion is it has a wide metplat that is binding in the leade.  Your 3/8" is a lot and shoudn't be if your COL is near SAMMI and there is no bell on the case mouth.
I have loaded 461's in my H&R with no chambering issues

You might try dropping one of your bullets into the chamber and measuring from the end of the barrel to the base of the bullet. That measurement plus the length of the bullet will tell you exactly what your maximum cartridge overall length needs to be. Easy with a Handi rifle!

Thanks very much. I'm going to try a different bullet. Lets just say these are from a now defunct source. Hard cast? Anyway, going back to square one. Thanks again!!!
