My wife showed me an article yesterday about young people doing interviews for jobs. It said, they dress casual, one girl brought her cat with her, one guy brought his father with him, and almost all of them answered their phones, and did texting while being interviewed. The people doing the interviews said these young people, not matter how qualified, were scratched off the list because they couldn't pay attention to what was at hand and were not serious about the interview.
In my company, the last three construction workers they hired were all college grads (digging ditches). About 200 people put in for each of the jobs as they came up. Drug test was the first thing done, about half either didn't show up, or failed, off the list. That left about 100, then we did a credit check. About 75% of the remainder, off the list. Well, that narrowed it to about 25. We selected the 5 best, then intervied them. Yes, they had just graduated college, two were married. All had previous work experience from high school through college doing various jobs, and all had at least one job in some type of construction. One of the guys finally got a promotion when a job came up. Company uses these guys a few years in construction and when supervisor jobs or technical or skilled jobs come open, they are promoted up.
10 years ago, these construction jobs were given to high school grads who passed our test. 50 years ago, they were given to anyone who was willing to work, reguardless of their education. For the spell checkers, I am at work this morning, and the spell check doesn't work for some reason on my computer, so I appologise to the spelling police.
I said this to say, that the stupid ones who text, etc, are the ones who voted for Obama. The article said they were too coddled growing up, and were too dependent on their parents and never developed a social or work ethic. Texting isn't socialising. Oh, and my company prefers people with a military background, because they are more diciplined in their work ethic.
