Bought a new pumper...
« on: April 28, 2013, 10:06:31 AM »
Its a Crosman 1377.

I have owned at least two in the past, the first was called a Medalist. They have been around a long time. Anyhow, I had no idea just how popular they have become!! People have been finding ways to improve on an already good pistol. The increase accuracy, power and reliability!
I have a short list of things I want to do.

1) Steel Breech:
Factory is plastic and dosen't support the barrel. Doesn't allow for scope mounting and is plastic.

2) Valve modifications/changing:
What many do is to install a flat topped valve and altered piston. This produces greater pressures with each stroke, so this means higher velocities.

3) Bolt/ extended probe modifications:
This is to improve air flow to the pellet to further increase efficency and velocity. The very tip of the bolt, called the probe pushes the pellet into the barrel. By making it longer, you push the pellet into the rifling and ahead of the port where the air enters the barrel.

4) Simple trigger job:
Polish and true angles for a nice clean breaking trigger.

So far I have re worked the trigger, and make a extended bolt and installed a Steel Breech.

The gun shoots real good too!!

CW,
What .177 cal pellets are you using in the 1377?
Also what velocity are you getting out of that pistol? I knew one guy that had one and he was death on the starling population!

Hello Sam!!

So far I see she likes heavy pellets. All I have are JSB Diablos @ 11.5g and Monsters at 13.43g. But they shoot good! Here is a couple 5 shot groups from 11 yards.

As for velocities, I have yet to shoot thru the chrony. But its advertised as a 600FPS gun. 550FPS is a truer estimate. Then throw in the heavy pellets I an figuring its 525 range with the Monsters and 540 with the Diablo.

This one took two rats yesterday!! But neither with authority... both made it back to the holes.

I have the valve mods next. Those will net me 100+ fps.  :o ;) ;D

The probe mods I did yesterday will show there worth with the new valve.

I threaded the bolt for a knob. Thinned the probe tip and drilled a 1/16 hole in the very end for the extension. Then made and installed the extension.

They are a fun platform!!  Did you make the stocks?

A friend of mine made the stock and pump handle when we were in high school wood shop.

I also bought a new one with a plastic stock for my Son a few years back but he's too lazy to pump it.

By the way, the modern plastic Crosman stock is very sturdy and well worth the $20 I paid. Turns the gun right into a rifle.

Its a Ultra Dot 1''. Nice little scope. I have swapped it for a cheap NC Star reflex site.

The NC is nowhere near the quality of the Ultra Dot. But will serve my needs for this air gun.

if you mean the flat top valve and piston, you can buy then from a number of sources. I'm told Mellon air is one of the best but I have not bought from him.

Both one these guns have a Crosman Steel breech installed. This replaces the plastic crap for better support, accuracy and a 3/8" groove for mounting sites or optics! 35$ from pyramid air or direct from Crosman customer service.

EASY install too! Need to buy specfic for caliber as the bolts are differe t.

I am having a blast with the CO2 2240!!

Man thats a great looking rig you got there CW 8)
I've built a few of those too, did the same thing you did by changing to a steel breech, make sure and check out the EXCELLENT " Mellon air" site where Charlie Mellon http://www.mellonair.com/ makes some great mods for the 2240's.I put one of his power adjusters on every gun i did up, it really lets you fine tune power and accuracy. His extended and flow thru bolt is well worth the price to, even though they only add 20-25fps to your velocity.

That 2240 has to be one of the most comfortable guns to shoot you could ever ask for, crosman really was battin 1000 with that one. Your scope and mount look fantastic btw.  J

You know I have!!

I have just installed a extended probe bolt in the 2240. I need to check again to see what velocity I have picked up..

The slimmer probe allows alot more air to get to the pellet. The longer length pushed the delicate pellets skirt out of the port. It increasing accuracy and Velocity.

Yes, I was pleased to see the numbers!  But I will improve on that too!! I have a flat top piston and Valve assembly that could be good for up to 100 FPS increase!  ;D

Hello Brother!

(I am just about done with your stock!!)

None to worry about at least from what I have read.  ;)  Many have gone before me and are thrilled with the preformance...

I ordered a longer barrel and a TKO brake too (14'') so I should be damn close to the 700's.  ;) ;) ;)

Its gonna look like yours ibgp3 soon enough!!

Well time will tell... But yoy are correct installing the FTP/V assemblies and the solid pin will allow for increased pumps without damage.

I attempted to crony the last night but was denied... I fired about a doz shots and regestered a single reading... @ 6 pumps I got 535fps.... SO, that is a increase for sure before I was getting 570.5fps avg at 10 pumps. This weekend will see how all this shakes out.

I was shooting past sunset the light plays a huge rold with this unit. It refuses to work for me indoors even with good light.

My 1377 arrived, and everything looks great...
....but the bolt won't go back and when I work the pump the air bleeds off with each stroke.

I went through the users manual and got nothing.
Is there a bleed mode?

CW,
Are you familiar with the Crosman Backpacker Model 1389?
If so how does it compare with the Model 1377?

The 1398 was a older model with a 14'' barrel in 22 cal. Pretty much the same gun, only with a butt stock, different pump handle, longer barrel and of coarse, 22 cal.  Good gun!

Today, you will have to but the Crosman''bug out'' kit. This gets you a butt stock, a 22cal 12'' barrel, a tin of pellets and some little things. 75$ at Pyramid Air.

Velocity wise, its just a bit slower, say 420-440fps BUT with a 50% heavier pellet.

I was considering one myself... went so far as to make out a order... Decided not to as all I would really get was a 22 cal.... I have a 22 cal RWS 34 that shoots faster, and hits harder with a scope on it.

I like the 177 for this project so I called up Crosman and ordered a 18'' barrel... 22$! LOL  so when it arrives It will look like ibgp3's 2260.  Only in .177, with the FTP/V assembly and the barrel I should have some respectable velocities.

My 1377 arrived, and everything looks great...
....but the bolt won't go back and when I work the pump the air bleeds off with each stroke.

For the bolt, be sure the screws are not binding, there are two, one tiny one under the bolt.. BE CAREFUL!! Be sure you have the correct sized allen and be certain it is fully and completely inserted before removing. IT IS EASILY STRIPPED!

For the valve, its probably related. Once you get the bolt free it will likly work fine. You may need to remove the breech. I am betting it is somehow jambing the hammer.

A take down can be seen on you tube, if needed. Its pretty easy. Ill help too if you would like. PM or email me. cwlongshot@att.net

Thanks, I typed in the question and then went to you tube.
I'm starting to wonder if the previous owner ever got it together right.

A couple of screws were cross-threaded. (I chased the threads)
...some parts were not lined up.
A complete disassembly and reassembly and now it works.

I didn't expect to learn the whole drill so soon.
