Have a line ona 10 gauge H&R, need it like a hole in the head but thinking of picking it up for fun.  Maybe start hunting turkeys, or try slugs for deer.  Thought?

Thanks for the reply.  I don't have a 12 gauge, but do have a Mossberg 500 20.  Thinking about it mostly because I just want it.  We'll see what the boss says about another "fun" gun.

LOL so do they kick much?  I figure I can pick it up reasonably enough that I can at least have some fun shooting it with the guys.  If I decide I don't like it I can always swap on a 12 gauge barrel.  Are the 10 gauges built on the same receivers as the other shotguns?

Don't have one but I think they are on a special 10 gauge frame.  I know you couldn't put a larger barrel on my 12 gauge frame.

The 12 ga. slug gun is on a 10 ga. frame it looks like a larger frame , but then there may be a barrel to fit it.

10ga and 12ga USH barrels can only be fitted to an SB2 10ga shotgun frame, the frame has the same external dimensions as an SB1 or SB2 rifle frame, but the opening for the chamber swell is larger to accommodate the larger 10ga chamber swell which is 1.2XX" compared to 1.1XX" for the other barrels. The SB2 shotgun frame is also steel compared to cast iron of the SB1.

The 10ga with a cylinder choke makes an interesting slug gun.  I have shot mine with 2 oz slugs at +1300 FPS.  The divot in my forehead says installing a scope mount on the chamber swell instead of using the factory scout scope mount wasn't a very bright idea. :o

Just started a thread on 10ga turkey hunt, the H&R/NEF 10's are fine guns for shooting heavy loads at long ranges, recoil is no worse than 12ga, a sims recoil pad and it is not noticeable, thanks to it weighing over 9#.

Well I brought her home today.  Will take her to the range as soon as I can find some ammo.  Hopefully its a fun gun.

If I understand correctly only a 10 gauge barrel, or a 12 gauge slug barrel can be fitted to a 10 gauge receiver?

Got to shoot the 10 gauge today.  Nothing extensive, just shot a dozen or so shells after work.  The recoil wasn't as bad as expected, no worse than a 12 it seemed.  Gun seems to be shooting fine.

Now, what to do with this thing?

Own a 20 gauge with a rifled slug barrel for deer, that's the extent of my shotgun experience.

Get into turkey hunting?  Geese?  Any other practical application?
