Manson Crowning tool
« on: April 29, 2013, 04:53:56 AM »
Has anyone used any of the manson crowning tools including the military?  Thinking about cutting a barrel off.  Seems the manson tool would be perfect for squarring the barrel and cutting a crown if it works as good as his video shows.  Have always been wary of the "As Seen on TV" type deals.  Wanted to get some feedback from those of you that have actually used them.  How do they compare to the barrel being put in a lathe and the crown cut?

Thanks..............Happyhunter201

Manson makes extremely functional tooling and those I've used worked quite well. Properly run I've always had great results.. A lathe is likely more accurate but will the rifle produce results sufficiently better to justify the added investment..

I don't have the Manson, but have a PTG, works fine in an electric drill, although it tends to cause chatter which can be sanded and polished out, I've done several barrels with the PTG, I have 22 and 30 cal pilots, and have made others of brass. There are alternatives for the home gunsmith.

I have used that PTG 22cal, and it works great.  Go slow, stop and clean often.  I didn't think the chatter marks were bad enough to need polishing out, but they are there if you look closely.

I bought the Manson kit from Dave at the last SHOT show, and use it for situations where I can't get the barrel in the lathe, like with revolvers and rifles that don't come apart easily. It works very well with two observations. The pilots are a bit fragile so be careful with them. They work fine, just treat them gently. The other is some barrels refuse to be cut without leaving a burr. Most work fine, but some steel just has to leave a burr, so in those cases I lap out the edge with a brass ball on a stick run by a drill motor. So, my recommendation? For one gun done at home it is a lot of money to get you where you want to go. But for a shop like mine where crown jobs are done every day, it is quite useful and will pay for itself in short order. Oh, he also has pilots for shotguns so it works beautifully for shortening barrels on those too.
