35 Whelen
« on: April 29, 2013, 08:22:01 AM »
I finally got a good one! All 5 shots went bang the very first time today when I did a test fire. 55gr of RL15 put the last three 200gr FTXs into 1 1/4" at 85yds. The recoil wasn't as bad either with the 200gr bullet compared to the 225s I have shot in the past.

I plan to load about 10 more for confirmation of zero and then it will get a rim counterbore cut for shooting reformed 7x65R brass. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny, being new to the forum I don't the history behind your gun?  I got mine for my birthday a few years back.  Wanted one ever since the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Limited Edition came out.  As soon as I saw them available I was lobbying my wife for it.  This year it was a 100 + year old side by side Sexton. I am truly blessed

I had an older Whelen barrel a while back that had 60% FTFs. Some here speculated it was my novice reloading and that they could reload it to shoot just fine. I sold it. This newer barrel has no issues, it likes my reloads just fine.

Thanks, Dinny

I keep reading about the headspace problems with the Whelen... Never had one with my two, but I figure that H&R must have sorted out the problem because they are still selling Whelen's in a couple configurations... If they were getting an abnormal number of them back, they wouldn't risk the marginal profit in the Whelen sales.

I have two factory H&R 35 Whelens, an RMEF and a 2006 Handi, never had a problem with either as far as headspace, but have had a box of Remington factory brass that had the shoulder pushed back too far on part of it, I formed a false shoulder on them and fireformed them to work just fine in the RMEF, so for a handloader, there's always a work around, not so for the factory ammo shooter.  :-\ I strongly suspect a lot of the problems are caused by bad brass in factory ammo.

I got one back when they were making the RMEF guns.  When I first got it I had some FTF and FTEject issues.  Sent it back to the factory, they fixed it.  They also did a trigger job.  Have had no issues since.  It shoots great.  My Dad killed a Moose with it, one shot.

I have never had a problem with mine.  I do know there were alot with the 400's.  Problem being the depth and angle of the shoulder.

Glad this one is working out for you.  I got one a year or so ago through the accessory program and it is a very good barrel.  I've only shot handloads through it...actually Varget pushing 200grain hornady FTX.  It's an honest 3/4" barrel at 100yds with this combo.  Took a nice MS whitetail with her this past season.

Haven't started to reload yet, it's on the list. But I paired mine up with a new 25-06 barrel this spring.  Even with available factory loads the combo is good for any med to large game in North America.

I'd like to have a 26" barreled 35Whelen!

on my two, to check HS when I first got them, I dropped 270 factory loads in them, and they fired fine.

I have some 35W factory loads now to try, but haven't been able to get the time.

They're out there, but being made only for one year, not many and they bring a good price, mine was $350 8yrs ago.

I picked up a barrel on trade several years ago was going to start working up loads  UNTIL < I read the 55gr. part.
it wouldn't take long to eat up my powder reserve with that and the 500 s&w.

I did get my hands on 6000 magnum rifle primers though.  What other powders that might fill the need for the whelen?

thanx

A 35 Whelen loaded to .356 Win. or .358 Win. ballistics will be just fine for most needs, and a lighter cast bullet load even more so. Just because its a big case, or a big engine, doesnt mean your foot has to be in it ALL the time.

gcrank is right about the lower velocity loads in a Whelen.  I have a Whelen in a Pro Hunter.  Even with the recoil absorbing stock a full power load can be rough after a while.  I have substantial back and neck issues with a lot of hardware holding things together.  I can shoot the full power loads, but only if I have to.  Recoil is pain.  I am experimenting with loads to push a 200 grain bullet around 2500 fps or so.  There isn't much this will not kill and they sure are nicer to shoot.  Just have to find the right amount of the right powder.
