Doughnut Sights?

I have the Lyman 17 globe sight with the various inserts.  What are the applications of the non-post donut-hole aperatures; are they also called di-opter sights?  I have also seen a version without the outer globe or hood identified as a Vickers-Maxim style rifle sight (once made by Marbles, dating back to Col. Whelen's book, page 153, figure 42).  I assume they are not specific to V-M machine guns of WW-I or earlier?

Diopter style sights are primarily for paper bullseye type shooting.  You vary the size of the inner and outer circles till they are concentric and then the black bullseye fits right inside the middle one.  Good for paper, but I prefer the Lyman Pin sight for long range shooting personally.  ;)

There is a good article in Wikipedia on diopter sights.  The globe front sight is used in conjunction with the diopter rear.  I guess you could call it a fancy peep sight.  The "donut hole" apertures are for target shooting as the eye can easily center the concentric circles of the front sight in the aperture of the rear, and the circular target inside the front.  I hope that makes sense.  Check out the article, it has a pretty good illustration.

Just as tacklebury said for paper comp shooting.  when you are shooting 10m air and projectile is .177,10 ring is .180 in dia and the x is the size of a "  .  " those come in very handy, the x count leaves the entire 10 ring in tact
