Native Americans upset over pro gun billboard in Colo.

Native Americans incensed over pro-gun rights billboard in Colorado  Published April 30, 2013
Associated Press
  •    April 26, 2013: A billboard in Greeley, Colo. in which images of Native Americans are used to make a gun rights argument. (AP)
Two billboards in which images of Native Americans are used to make a gun rights argument are causing a stir with some Colorado residents who say the image is offensive and insensitive.
The billboards in this northern Colorado city show three men dressed in traditional Native American attire and the words "Turn in your arms. The government will take care of you."
Matt Wells, an account executive with Lamar Advertising in Denver, said Monday that a group of local residents purchased the space.
"They have asked to remain anonymous," he said.
He also refused to disclose the cost but said the billboards are only appearing in the Greeley area. Wells said he has not received any complaints so far.
"I think it's a little bit extreme, of course, but I think people are really worried about their gun rights and what liberties are going to be taken away," Wells told the Greeley Tribune.
Greeley resident Kerri Salazar, who is of Native American descent, said she was livid when she learned about it. She said she doesn't have a problem with the gun rights message, but she's offended the Native American people were singled out, apparently without their consent.
"I think we all get that (Second Amendment) message. What I don't understand is how an organization can post something like that and not think about the ripple effect that it's gonna have through the community," she said.
Irene Vernon, a Colorado State University professor and chairwoman of the ethnic studies department, said the message on the billboard is taking a narrow view of a much more complicated history of the Native American plight. She said it's not as if Native Americans just gave up their guns and wound up on reservations.
"It wasn't just about our guns," said Vernon, a Native American.
Greeley resident Maureen Brucker, who has worked with Native American organizations and who frequents the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota as an honorary family member, said she thinks the billboards are making light of atrocities the federal government committed against Native Americans.
She said the billboard brings to her mind one of the most horrendous examples of that, the Wounded Knee Massacre on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1890. Historical accounts say the 7th Cavalry had detained a band of Native Americans and asked them to give up their weapons. Troops began firing after a shot rang out. Death toll estimates of Native American men, women and children range from 150 to 300.
Brucker said she thinks those who put up the billboards should come forward to discuss their viewpoints.
"I thought it was pretty cowardly that someone would put something like that up and spend the money for a billboard but didn't have the courage to put their name on it," she said.

So are they offended by the photo, the traditional dress, or the pro gun message.

The message certainly should only be a reminder of what happens when you get disarmed. I'm offended that they are offended. Geez

It is the liberals playing the race card.
Clearly the pro gun people will take down the ad for bing called Racists.  And then say they are sorry for offending anyone.
It is page 4 of the liberal play book.

someone needs to re-read the accounts of wounded knee.

for one thing, the 7th did not "Ask" for their weapons, they were ordered to surrender them...

for another, once the carnage began, it was brutal, merciless and unnecessary ..some of the UNARMED, that included women and children, victims were pursued as far as a mile from the campsite and slaughtered.

the 7th lost 20 dead...the near starved, native Americans armed with a few single shot carbines and a few lever actions had no chance against hotchiss guns and Gatling guns.

i've read one opinion that the 7th was still "Licking their wounds from the defeat at the Little Big Horn and were seeking vengeance."

if every able bodied person (Native American) were armed on that tragic day, there may have been a different historical account given today.

bill clinton apologized to black Americans for slavery, who will apologize for wounded knee? sand creek? the trail of tears?

no law abiding american citizen should be asked, let alone, ORDERED, to surrender their firearm(s)

I don't believe "Native Americans" in general are offended. I think it is just a couple of mouth pieces who jump at any chance to see their name in the news and even they are trying pretty hard to dig up a sense of outrage they don't really feel and as usual the media exaggerates in their effort to portray gun owners as insensitive and crude. I see the billboard as being a sympathetic reminder of the injustice done to native peoples and a warning that "yes it can happen here, it has happened before".
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I am all for the No guns allowed signs.  If you own a business and do not want me to spend money there, I fully respect your choice.  I would also avoid them on other levels.  If I were a criminal and looking to do armed robery I would pick one of the NO guns allowed places to hit as I have a better chance of not being hurt and getting away with more valuables.  And I can be pretty sure the old guy in the corner booth is reaching for his wallet and not a glock.  I do not want to be in the back booth as that smart crack head desides to rob the gun free place.  I will be more than happy to go to "Bullets and Brew" the gun friendly coffe house and be safe with my latte and crossant.  And the sign on the door, "CCW welcome, Crack heads will rob the Gun Free places and take their patrons hostage as the police surround the place"  As a matter of fact that would be the bilboard ad campaign I would run in town.
And "Does Gun Free store apply to Police as well?  Shop where you are welcome and will not be hassled - Bullets and Brew  Free Donut to law enforcement with 20 Oz coffee.  Ok free Donut to anyone with a 20 Oz coffee. Oh and Cleanest restrooms in the county in case you need a pits stop."   locations in town, one near you now!

I will take a chance of being labeled a bigot by saying I suspect some Native Americans see the truth in the Billboard , others don't care one way or the other and still others see it as an opportunity to get 15 min of fame . And still others who for personal reasons are offended. Pretty much like most races of people on earth with regard to an event that includes them.

My fathers grandmother walked the "Trail of Tears". She was six, and was made to walk or be left by the soldiers.
I've heard the family stories all my life. The signs in "The New Socialist Republic of Colorado" make perfect sense to me. What better example of governmental abuse?
My family was moved half way across the United States at gun point AFTER we had already complied with "government requests" on guns, and many other issues.

Yup!  Some Libbies are livid! ;) ;D
Those Libbies whine how "insensitive" somebody is to have not asked every Indian or Native American..if using another Indian's picture was acceptable.

How often have Libbies insulted Christians?  ...And I don't recall a single one of them polling me for permission.

Many of us recall very well how the troops have been insulted by insensitive clods like Hanoi Jane and her ilk.  I don't remember having been polled bak then either..

The fact is,  those three examples are simply someone using their 1st amendment..favoring free speech..

Appears to me that any Native American that respects their heritage of freedom and courage would understand and support the message of the billboard. ear

Dee,
One branch of my family tree moved to Fla. among the Seminole when the others were marched to Oklahoma.  Few people really can realize what our US  Government did to those it claimed as citizens just a few months before.

We should all take note and keep our weapons at all costs.  To give them up means forced servitude and death...that billboard is correct.

Dee,

I am sorry for the tribulation of your ancestor on the Trail of Tears.   I have a small bit of Cherokee blood [born and raised in east Tennessee] on my father's side.   I would imagine my ancestor was one of the Cherokee tribesmen/tribeswomen who hid in the hills till the Army was gone.

I can understand the sentiments of the American Indians about the billboard.  It opens a chapter of their cultural histories they would prefer remained in the past.    Yet, it would be logical for them to stand with pro-2A organizations.

One note:  The article said "some Colorado residents who say the image is offensive and insensitive."

I'd bet they aint Indians. I'm figgering its leftist folk in favor of gun grabbing, who would be offended had anybodys picture been up there. One picture they could have used is the one where all the jewish people are lined up at the ditch and The German SS is walking by shooting them in the backs of their heads! Thats ANOTHER reason not to be unarmed.

For all we know the"unamed people"
that rented the space are Indians and that is a Family Photo!   NEVER ASS U ME!

There was people from four different tribes that said they agreed with the bill board. It has been said that if we forget the past we will soon repeat it.

  Cooter;
Don't let some newspaper article..which is likely quoting someone who is far more Leftie than Indian, turn you sour on the whole group. My home county has 3 reservations with more in surrounding counties.  Most of the Indians I know, believe in freedom just as much as you and I do.
NY governor Cuomo's recent dictatorial legislation against gun owners is just as onerous to them as it is to the rest of us !  It won't directly affect them on the reserves, but they still dislike and distrust the city-bound politician..
Among his stupid rules is a "background check" on ammo purchases.  This will inadvertently aid the Indians.  I can see ammo purchases going to the reservations just as it does with tobacco, booze and gasoline now. .. and some will go to neighboring states.

Before "Adolph" Cuomo brought out his draconian laws, I was in the planning of opening an outdoor shop, centered around ammo, which would have been discounted in bulk purchases.  I would have been required to include the 8%  NY sales tax!
Naturally, if this law stands (it is being fought) the 8% tax money will NOT be coming back into the very needy NY treasury...
....Smart move for a bunch of low-brow Lefties! ;) :o :P
