Protecting the end of chopped barrels?

I have a 20 gauge that I had cut down and threaded for chokes.  I have noticed that the very end of the barrel and the section inside the barrel before the threads start, have developed significant surface rust.  I have been thinking about cutting down my .357 as well and I know plenty of people on here have done this.  What do you use to prevent rust?  Just spot blueing?  Thanks for your help.

Cold bluing does jack crap for rust protection.   Hot bluing is what you need.  ...that or one of the other methods like true case hardening, parkerizing, paint, etc, etc.

However, those other methods tend to change the dimensions.  And case hardening a barrel isn't practical.   ...so, hot bluing is really the only method that will work on a bearing surface.

I used the Oxpho Blue on my 16 1/2 223 Handi, I call it Stubby. It has stood up well for over two years so far.

when it comes to the oil on top I have had to many years of Breakfree being stuffed down my throat  (20 yrs USMC). had sworn off all CLP's.  Thinking not going to take the same meds for constipation and diarrhea. but about ten years ago found FP-10. It works like nothing else.  it leave a protective layer and carbon won't stick and rust won't form.  That's just my 2 cents worth.

I ended up doing a whole H&R 12 ga using Birchwood Casey's Permablue paste and SuperBlue for hardened steels.  I had poor luck with their products previously, but never knew about boiling water being the fix.  I boiled each part and while it was still hot added the blue, then rinsed, steel wooled and boiled again.  I left the blue on for about 3 minutes each layer and it came out good.  For the end of the barrel, the SuperBlue would be perfect.  Just hold in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes and then dip into super blue (liquid) and pull out and let sit for 3 minutes, then rinse well with water, steel wool it and do it again until it matches the factory blue.  Probably only take 2 coats.

I'd think twice about using FP10 over Eezox, FP10 didn't fair as well in either of the tests.

Its been around for many years but not readily avalible in stores.  Its good stuff for freeing sticky and rusted bolts and cleaning gun barrels!!  Grab a can!

As for the crowns, I usually do nothing... i leave them in the white. I keep everything wiped off/down with Eezox and have for many years. No ''finish'' has ever been needed.  :o ;)

CW and Tim have lead me down the primrose path.  I've compromised my almost religious convictions about cleaning....no. it's more about not cleaning guns.  I just ordered an 18 ounce Eezox :o   Now, I'm cowering, waiting for the Prince of Filth to strike.....be assured it'll be a lifetime supply ;)

Larry doesn't have much of a future at Profino Gunworks. ::)

Friend of mine built one of the heated Parkerizing tanks, IIRC it is similar to what Larry built, and it works very nicely.  Parkerizing a barrel is very easy for me because my friend does the work and I stand and watch him. ;D
