new Yamaha
« on: May 01, 2013, 04:15:02 AM »
I finally did it.  After weeks and weeks of going to the dealers and sitting on bikes, I bought a new 950 Tourer.  Put a Mustang seat on it with driver's backrest.  Both feet flat on the pavement when stopped, which I very much needed due to a back problem.  I've only taken a couple of 100 mile trips so far, but I don't see why it wouldn't take me anywhere.

It ain't like the Gold Wings I had years ago, that's for sure, but it's nimble.  I needn't have worried about the power.  More than plenty.  Because of break-in guidelines, I've not had it beyond 1/3 throttle, but even at that, it's really quick.

The downside is a steady 70mph or more on the Interstate.  Not enjoyable.  Too much vibration if I stay at that speed for long.  Real comfy though at 65 and down.
Wish I had a pic to post.  My brother bought a new Yamaha 1300 at the same time.  He's a real big person and it fits him well.  The two bikes have the same wheelbase, but his is definitely bigger.

All the reviews said the floorboard would scrape in a tight turn, twisties or even out of a parking lot, but so far mine has not.

Hey.....glad you pulled the trigger and you like your bike.  Enjoy the season.  I was behind a Woman with a group of Harley riders.  She was on a brand new Sporster  They were headed to a local bar out her in the country.......she was so cool with her new leathers and pink bandana.  We came to a 4 way stop and hit some traffic( cycles usally run this stop sign).  She tried to tippy toe it but DOWN GOES FRAIZER.  Took her friends help to pick up the bike......  good call on the height.

I am a BIG Yamaha fan.  Love the bikes and truly the best v-twin engine made.  I have owned several of the larger bikes.  Currently on a Stratoliner!  Ride hard my Yamaha brother!

My oldest son's first bike was an 800 Vulcan classic Kawasaki. My oldest son is 6'6" and a 300 lb, and ain't fat guy. The 800 was too small for him. So he went to a used Super Glide Harley that had been made into a 1600. He worked on that bike constantly, and it looked new when he finished. It used oil, but didn't smoke, and he loved that bike, even though it was "sorta high maintenance". Then he totaled it (wreck not his fault), limped away, and loving his Harley the way he did, two days ago he bought a 1300R VTX Honda.
I've owned several Hondas, 1 Yamaha, 1 Kawasaki, and 2 Suzukis, even an old Cushman Husky, since I started riddin in 1962, and Yamaha is as good as any out there. Congratulations!

Some people do not miss an opportunity to do a little Harley bashing. I do not understand it.

Well lets see Cheesy. I said that my son worked real hard at basically restoring a Harley Super Glide, and worked at it constantly, until it looked new when he finished. I said that it used a little oil but didn't smoke, and that he loved the bike even though it was "sorta high maintenance". All of that is true. How about ALUMINUM primaries that had to be polished AFTER they had been sanded back down, and when you road it in a rain it spots. Is that "Harley bashin" or an observation? He did not want to work that hard again on a older bike, and went back to a metric. The newer metric has CHROME primaries ect.
I think it's more like some of you Harley guys are a little too sensitive. I've owned a few metrics that were high maintenance. If I said one was a Honda, and one was another Honda, would I be "Honda bashin"? I like ALL bikes and if you have read any of my threads on bikes, you know I have tried to buy a couple of Harleys, but can't get past the money difference. You can take it as "Harley bashin" or talkin bikes. I don't care one way or the other, but I wasn't "Harley bashin". Now it is a well known fact that some of you "Harley guys" won't ride with folks that ride metics. I do not understand THAT. But I'm ok with it.

A lot of Harley guys don't even return the courtesy wave.  Guess they think it's below them.  I ride a Vulcan, son rides a Honda, his buddy has a baaad soft tail, another has a crotch rocket of some sort and an old vintage Indian.  We'll make fun of anything we want.  No thin skin or whiny attitude in this bunch.  The guy I stopped to help early one morning last week with a smokin electrical problem and a dead cell phone probably bashed Harley more than anyone I ever met and guess what he was riding. ;)
