Shikari failure to fire
« on: May 02, 2013, 01:57:54 AM »
Howdy gents, my first post.  Pick up a 45 70 shikari & went to shoot it yesterday.  Has problems --got 3 to fire & 4 that wouldnt.  Lite strikes on the primer. Tried them in my trapdoor & they went off.  SO, can I change the firing pin, lifter, springs etc myself or should I go to a gsmith?  I'm pretty good at guntinkering.
Any help is appreciated

Factory ammo or hand loads?  Firing pin protrusion length?

I am guessing it is a weak hammer spring, it is a common problem. Yes you can change it out yourself. Double check that the firing pin is not broken off, but I still think your problem is more than likely the spring. Refer to the FAQ section to find out every thing you need to know about the Handi rifle and it's quirks.

I purchased one of these about 3 years ago and mine had the same problem.  I didn't feel comfortable doing the work myself so I took it to a local gun smith and he put new springs in.  We are good to go ;D .  I would imagine the same would be true for you. ;)
Why is there never enough time to do it right but there is always enough time to do it again?

Welcome! Just make sure you order the right hammer spring, if it doesn't have the transfer bar (lifter striker) is takes the double coil spring, if it does it takes the single coil, late Shikaris had transfer bars, get a Wolff extra power spring for it, trigger work instructions can be found in the FAQs sticky, although it covers modern transfer bar frames, the earlier frames are similar.

Thanks for the comments guys.  They are my reloads but they fired in my trapdoor after they failed in the Shikari.  The firing fin protrusion looks short to me but haven't measured it yet.  I'll tear it down this weekend & see what I find.  I'll be using another fine mess info to guide me.
Mine is a 1973 AL series so it doesnt have the transfer bar.
Thanks again
David

My old 12 ga. pre-T-Bar had the original spring go slack from sitting un-cocked. Get the new dbl. leg spring and also take out the firing pin to clean the channel; it will likely work fine after that.

Tore it down last night & guess what I found?  A badly bent barrel catch spring.  Got my needle nose & straightened it, reassembled it ,and fired 10 primed cases!  Now to order new springs all around.
So, after 40 years its time to replace the springs!!!!!!!  Not bad for a simple ole rifle!

After 40 years I could use a few springs myself! ;D  Too bad it is not that simple to fix your aches and pains!
