Strange marks
« on: February 21, 2004, 12:22:50 PM »
I found these marks on the ground behind my house. I have seen deer paw the ground kind of like this in a rake but this is not in a rake and looks more like large claw marks. Does anyone have any ideas?

I got it......It is a True Temper Garden Cultivator with 48" handle, only used 2 previous seasons by a woman approximately 5'3" ..no...no 5'6", the handle is made of ash ands the ore used to make the tines was mined in Penn State....?

If you have any other question feel free to ask..Do we get the quarter if we guess right?..

Are there any indication of toes? And how many scars in a row?

Man. How did you ever guess? You must have been spying on my wife.   I did not see any toe marks and I can't really tell how many times the creature clawed the ground, maybe two or three times. It rained a little here last night so it was damaged some. My dog has been spooked for a few nights in the wee hours of the morning, barking and staying close to the porch. I might sneak out and see if I can see it tonight. I have seen deer in our yard, heard coyotes, and the neighbors have seen a black panther a couple of years back coming down our drive. We live about 1/2 mile from the road in the middle of the woods, so it could be anything I guess.

 Hi dbuz :D
It could have been a bobcat or a big tom cat. Cat`s will rake the ground to cover up their crab and urine. Next time you go out there, uncover the spot and see if you see any droppings. If not, then it could have been covering up its urine.

To me it looks like the claws?hooves? are out all the time...If it was a cat I would think you would see the toes in the scratches...

MarkJ, how could you be something coming from the quarters I am leaving around? If you are going to be a wise guy, make sure you spell your words correctly.

The ground is hard there. I am sure there is not any droppings, I don't know about the urine. Maybe MarkJ can come and taste test the dirt and see.

No. I live in central Alabama. We have racoons, oppossums, armadillos, groundhogs, coyotes, turkeys, deer, fox, bobcats, squirrels, mountain lions, and an occasional black bear(very rare though). The marks are larger than a house cat would make.

The markings are very typical of a cat. There territorial markings, generally found in a saddle between two hills or montains. They could be either bobcat or lion, but we can rule out black panther. There are none, maybe a melonistic cat but verrrrry rare.

I'm not trying to suggest that it is a black panther, but like I said, my neighbors have seen one around here. A guy I go to church with has seen one twice a few miles from his house. I have heard of numerous sightings around central and northern Alabama. I have never seen either of the large cats in the wild. The area of the marks is between two very large hills with a creek on the back side and a very large hill behind the creek. We are in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. A friend saw a momma black bear and two small cubs on a creek about 10 miles from my house. They are very rare around here.

These tracks appear to be made by the worlds fastest land animal.... The Stripped A**** ape! I knew that this animal was faster than the cheeta because this is what the local hot rodders & bikers told me about how their machines run.

My second guess here is that the tracks are small hoof type being super imposed over each other.
Can I have my two quarters now?

Palgeno,
You could be right, it would be better if we could see the area around it a little more.
