Do Lever Guns with Tube Magazine an Exact Bullet Length?

Prior to now, based on pump 22's I've had with tube mags... I've always thought tube mag designs didn't care about bullet lenght. (I.e the ones I've had would let you mix up LR, L, Short, CB caps, etc. Think Winchester Model 62.)

But this diagram makes it look like a row of short cartridges would block the lifter? What am I missing?

The shell stop only releases one cartridge at a time from the magazine - just like a pump shotgun.

I would think, yes. But I can't see how (in the above diagram) that's happening.

In your example (the Marlin action) the lifter (aka carrier) also functions as the shell stop.
 
There are cam surfaces on the lever that interface with the lifter.  Cycling the lever effects up and down movement of the carrier, the front of which blocks cartridges from sliding back onto the carrier except at one precise point in the cycle.
 
It's kind of hard to explain, but if you google "the Marlin jam" you'll find some better explanations of it.

my 94  win  AE  in 44 mag  shoots  44 special fine


but will ocasionally flip  a 44 russian over and try to chaber it backwards

Ah, OK, I see... the carrier is supposed to be timed to meter in exactly one shell at a time... if the time and spacing get off... a second one pops in (like the diagram I linked made me think it would)... and jams the whole works up because the carrier forces the second shell up against the top of the magazine tube.

Hmm... I wonder how a Model 94 is different in this respect?
