Win. 94SE/AE (newer eject) rear peep sights
« on: May 06, 2013, 03:12:41 PM »
Looking for my options for a receiver peep sight on Win 94SE via two rear scope holes which straddle the bolt.
May be an old question, perhaps with new options.  I wonder which has lowest profile, perhaps allowing for lower front sight options.  I see Williams FP-94SE (w/TK if I can find), Skinner sights and XS has two (shorter and taller).  The XS look cleanest, steel Skinner built like a tank, but I think I might perfer the Williams, which I have on other rifles.  Do all these require replacement taller front sights? (my 24" barrel does not have a ramp).

My experience is that you will need a taller front sight blade if your barrel doen't have a ramp.  There are some taller front blade sights on Ebay currently at reasonable prices.  The Williams FP sight with hunter adjustments can be changed to target knobs.  I've done several (target knobs are available from Williams).  As for Skinner peep sights, the ones I've seen are nice.  However, the adjustments are rather primative (on the ones I have experience with).  I like Lyman receiver sights too.  But for the money it is hard to beat the Williams FP sight.

After installing probably 3 dozen different receiver peep sights on almost as many different rifles over the last 45-odd years, I can tell you that:

1) Both the XS & Skinner peep's, being tall enough to raise the issue "line-of-sight", WILL require a somewhat taller front sight blade to achieve a 100yd zero.

2) Since both the Williams 5D-94AE & the FP-94AE are designed with the horizontal aperture holder behind the sight base, they do NOT raise the line-of-sight - and so are easily zeroed using an issue-height front sight blade (ramped or not).  You may/may not want to switch out the front sight blade anyway, for one with a more readily-visible bead - YMMV.

3) Please don't forget to remove the rear bbl open/iron sight, for a clean sight picture - and either buy a commercial slot filler blank, or file one up from the male dovetail portion of any old longleaf-type rear bbl open sight.

FYI - A shotcut to zeroing would be to align the peep sight with the existing bbl sights, at least for windage, before removing the rear bbl sight as above.

There is one made by XO or XS Sights I believe . I had it on a 94 and it worked perfect with existing front sight. It is low profile.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Thanks all,
I picked-up the rifle on Friday and my mind was fairly set on the Williams set-up.  Then, I noticed the pre-drilled and tapped extra hole by the tang-safety for a version of a Tang sight, which may make thumb grip more awkward.  Choices....
I am also considering a flip-up/down rear barrel sight of much shorter than carbine length (Savage .22's?); looks different than standard or fancy slot-blanks.

Since apparetnly your rifle's prepped for a tang sight, your might want to take into consideration a viable option, depengunt upon your intended use for the rifle.

That option would be to have TWO zeroes for the rifle, for which [b[both a tang peep sight & a folding rear bbl sight is needed, but an issue-height front sight is used:

The first zero could be for a relatively short-range  (say, 50-75 yds)  for the open/iron barrel sights.

The 2nd zero would be for a somewhat longer range (say, 150-200 yds) for the tang peep sight.

In actual use, I hunt/stalk with the tang sight folded and the rear bbl sight "up", in case a shot @ game suddenly presents itself fairly close.

If/when a longer shot @ game is presented, I've found there's usually ample time to fold the bbl sight & raise the tanger (at the same time, one with each hand) for the shot.
I say "one with each hand" because I generally stalk with one hand on the forend near the rear bbl sight, and the other on the stock's wrist near the tang sight - If someone is coodinated enought to grasp an ice cream cone with both hands & bring it to their mouth w/o slamming it into their forheads, the action should be a snap to perform.
