Handgun kill pics
« on: May 08, 2013, 06:52:46 AM »
I was wondering if some of you expert hand gunners would mind showing pictures of your harvest, maybe with a short explanation of the circumstances of the shot, what your specific handgun was, and your load.

Me, I ain't got no pics.  I haven't been all that successful in my years of revolver hunting.  A few deer and some small game, nothing special at all.  I'm looking forward to any responses.

Thanks

Uh-oh.  Misleading title.  Lots of views but no replies.  Looks like they thought I had pics.  Sorry.

No pics yet, but hopefully this coming deer season here in Pa. Will be hunting with my ruger blackhawk bisley in 45 colt. The load will be a missouri 255 gr. SWC at 1060 fps. Not a powerhouse load, but enough to get the job done. Shooting pretty good out to 50 yds. off hand so far. Tried to attach a pic of the revolver, but couldn't get to load up? Have shot a deer with my ruger gp100 357 magnum several years ago, and more recently with my 30-30 contender but need to get a kill with the new 45 colt.

Working on the Company Lap top right now.
I will post a picture of me in Idaho on an elk hunt where I shot a Rabbit with my Browning Buck Mark II with a 40 grain target round.
I have killed a bunch of other small game with pistols but never took pictures.
There have been Countless Mice in the garage with a Ruger Bisley and Aguilla Super rounds, (first tried a BB gun to have a bloody BB bounce all around the garage).  Southern CA
There have been Rabbits with my TPH, and my Browning buck Mark Super Sillohuette - Southern CA
There have been Squirrels with my Browning Buck Mark I and one Opposum my uncle was about to pick up till I told him to wait and shot it as it was Playing pussum.  NC
I have shot at a running deer with my 44 Mag 6" S&W M29 with 240 grain Soft points only to miss.  I found out you are not going to fast draw a Deer in the swamp  NC
Oh and Ground Squirrels with a T/C 14" 223 shooting lead free Federal.  Tajone Ranch on a pig hunt. I have a picture of my buddy with one he killed.

I can't get my pictures to this site like I used to. I hope this works.

This attachment is a 7 point buck that I took in 2010 with my T/C Contender with a 14" 30-30AI barrel made by MGM. He came into the logging path that I hunt on at 87 yards. I placed a 125gr Nosler ballistic tip that left the muzzle at 2670 fps propelled by 33 grs IMR 4198 from a WW case set off by a Wolf LR primer in the center of his front shoulder and he hit the ground dead as a hammer. I took 7 deer with this rig in 2010 & 2011. Last season I did not get a shot with the pistol. I have killed a lot of deer with different handguns. Most interesting day hunting with a pistol happened one evening about an hour before dark in 2009. I was hunting with a T/C Contender with a 10" 357 mag barrel. I was shooting a 180 gr Hornady XTP pushed by 13.5 grs H-110. I shot a BIG doe at 111 yards crossing the logging road mentioned above. She dropped in her tracks. Since you can shoot more than one deer a day in this section of NC I stayed in the stand until dark hoping another deer would show up. About 15 minutes after I shot this deer something low to the ground caught my eye on the other end of the logging path from where I had shot the deer. Coming down the road through the weeds was a fox. When it got a little closer to my stand I tried to distract it without making too much noise. I knew he would go down that path and find my deer and start eating on it. I have had this happen before. I had some 35mm film bottles that I use as sent bombs in the stand. I threw one at the fox. He stopped and look at it and then tried to bite it. It popped out of his mouth and startled him. He jumped into the woods and I thought he was gone. A few minutes latter I look down the path toward where my deer was laying and there was that fox standing up on top of my dead deer getting ready to start eating it. I carefully aimed the Contender and picked that fox right off my deer. It was was not 5 minutes latter that I looked up the path the other way and here comes another fox. I let it get about 50 yards away from me and made a fawn bleat sound to stop him. He did and I shot him between the eyes. The fellow that owns the farm where I hunt wants us to kill every fox we see because he raises chickens and they really do a number on his chickens.

This last deer season, I was totin' my .45 Colt in my chest holster and carrying my .45 Colt Carbine and sitting in a stand on opening morning.  It was barely first light and I saw a NICE buck about 75 yards out.  I waited until the magic minute came and it was a little dark in the woods.  I shot and it hit way off.  I couldn't believe it.  The deer just stood there, so I loaded another and it shot about 8 foot ahead of the deer and I was like no way....  Anyway I was looking the gun all over in the dingy dark woods and figured man my eyes are getting bad.  The buck ran off after the second shot though and I was sooo peeved.  I loaded up another shell and sat back thinking I'm really going to aim small this time and suddenly I heard a crack to my left rear and as I looked over my shoulder a 6 point was behind me and an 8 point & 4 point were fighting over about 30 yards and a little spike horn was running around them in a circle.  I couldn't believe my eyes.  The 6 point was intently licking a stick above his scrape and had his head stretched all the way up and he was 15 yards beside me.  I aimed at his heart, pulled the trigger and it completely missed!!  I knew something was wrong and wasn't going to miss another shot.  All three bucks just stood there looking around and as soon as I got a chance, I pulled the Blackhawk and put one through the 6 points heart.  He'd jumped pretty good after the report, so I was pretty sure I had him dead to rights, but as he bound over a hill 20 yards away I decided to put an anchor shot in him to be sure.  It went angling up through his left thigh and he was down in 3 more strides.  Anyway, this was my first deer with a handgun.  I've shot many squirrels, woodchucks and other things, but getting big game really rocks with a pistola.  ;)

Yes!  That's the kind of pics I was talking about.  Thanks very much.  I so love to see and hear stories about handgun hunts.  Nothing else like hunting with a handgun, no matter what the animal taken.  I believe anyone who can stand steady in the presence of game and put his handgun shot where it's supposed to go is the ultimate hunter.  I've missed so many animals in my pitiful attempts.  Even at my age, it's difficult to stay calm when the time comes to shoot.

I sure wish I had kept records on the number of deer I have shot with the 309JDJ! I bet I have shot 25 deer with the 309JDJ, 3 with 6.5 JDJ, one with 257JDJ, two with Encore 209x50 pistol.

Darrell, you are very young to have accomplished so much with a handgun.  Good shooting!  Congratulations.  Very few older guys are as experienced as you.

This young-un wandered into my orchard, unfortunately for him I was sitting in the doorway, enjoying a cold one watching deer. The .223 Contender was within reach, 125 yard shot.

A Vaal Rhebok taken with an Encore handgun chambered in 460 S&W Magnum.  At least for a time, maybe still, SCI number two in the handgun category.
