Coolest car you ever owned
« on: May 08, 2013, 08:30:05 AM »
Mine was a 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix that I bought for $100. What a land yacht! I had to push it to get it home, but on inspection I found that the only thing preventing it from running was a clogged fuel filter.

Aside from being a good looking car on the outside, white with lots of chrome, the interior was spectacular. Leather bucket seats. Center console. Wood inlay.

Big v8. 389 if I remember correctly. Automatic.

Smooooth.

I'm not sure what happened in the interim, but my longest standing preference in cars has been sportier cars that feel the road better.

I remember the first time I got it on an expressway and accellerated to get it up to cruising speed. I've never seen such a big black cloud of soot behind a car. That really blew it out. It never did that again. It had been mostly used just around town.

My current offroader:

1978 Land Rover Series III Safari Station Wagon. Range Rover 3.5l V8 block, Defender 3.9 top end, Series III box, SII transfer case, and portal axles (ENV11) from a Volvo C303 on Q78r16 Swampers. 18" under the diff and a 5:99:1 axle ratio. Weighs 3700 lbs wet! Awesome offroader. Pretty horrible on road.

And I loved my Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. But it wasn't as cool as this Land Rover.

Mine was a 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series 1
4.2 Liter straight 6 with a 4 speed manual.  Bought it for 2000.00 and sold it for 23000.00  Never did anything to it....just drove it some...not to much...had 42000 mile when I got it and 48000 when I sold it to a collector from New York.  Still had the original leather tool kit when she left.  It was silver...nice car...just needed LOTS of TLC every day to run right.

Datsun 2000 Roadster. CRS is killin' me. I've forgotten the year.  ::) It was built just before they brought out the Z car. It was supposed to run 140 mph but I never opened it completely up to see. I do know it would hit 110 in third and that left two more gears. I should ask my kid as he probably knows. Little thing got fantastic gas mileage if you would drive the speed limit but that was no fun at all. Wife and I would put the top down in cold weather, roll the windows up, turn the heater up full blast and go crusin'. We got a lot of funny looks but it was actually pretty comfortable.

The reason I said I should ask my kid is that I once owned a Buick Regal with the 455 cid engine. He told me a few years ago that he was never outrun in that car so I'm pretty sure he knows the top speed of the Datsun.

70 Plymouth roadrunner, 383, 4 speed, with 323 rears. Couldn't get anyone out of the hole, but after it got up to speed not many could catch it.  Also a 55 chevy straight six 3 speed on the column. That was my first car, when I was 16.

An orange 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner.  Bought it new.  Good gracious would that car hold a curve.  383 engine, 4 speed manual transmission, 323 rear end.  Just like DDZ's only one year older.

I once told the dealer that it vibrated a little after 120mph.  The mechanic that worked on it later came out where I was waiting and jumped on me like he was my dad.  Said he thought more of his driver's license than to go out and test the car at such a speed.  Fussed at me good.  Reckon I needed it, but I was just a know-nothing kid.

I took it squirrel hunting one time and drove it up a hill through a cow pasture to the woods.  While I was gone, the cattle came down and licked every square inch they could reach, I suppose to get salt.  What a mess.  One of the critters actually bit the front fender.

growing up No one in my family could ever afford a nice vehicle . When I went in the service all I ever drove was junkers. Whenever I got transferred I just bought another junker at my new duty station, You name the Junker , I probably drove it or one similar.

Until recently "Coolest" to me was probably a used 1992 nite edition Bronco with removable top and rust in all the right places.
Purchased in 1996/7 with 85k miles on it. Back then it Was great to throw dive tanks in the back and point it toward an ocean breeze.

Now "Coolest" to me anyways  is my 1946 Mercury 1 ton. Wife and I love it.

I don't know? I tend to like coupes but this roadster was just about the best cruising one. For driving I liked it. For looks I like a hard top.

Probably the car I learned to drive on - Dad's green 1967 Mustang, which he gave me a few years later. I liked it then, but really really REALLY wish I could have it back now. Nothing particularly exotic - 289, stick, dual exhaust - but it was quick and fun. It had been in the family since I was about... 12 or 13. Had it until my late 20s when it was destroyed in a crash (not my fault!).

Coolest cars Dad had were... 66 MGB, and a 67 Fairlane GTA w/390 (he got that for Mom on their 10th)

Most fun car I ever owned was a 1988 Mustang LX 5.0 (5 speed)

I come from poor. My dad raised chickens for living and we pretty much went broke when the chickens came down with Pinkeye. At the time the cure was to kill everything. From that I decided that the only way for me to get a car was to buy it or build it myself. I bought a 1934 Ford 3 window coupe out of a junk yard for $15.00 and brought it home on a trailer. Apparently the Gods were with me as everything seemed to fall in my lap- like a new Corvette engine fresh from GM that was prepped for drag racing for FREE. Just about the entire car went like that as all I had to do was build it.  By the time I finished the car it looked identical to this one:

I sold it and got a 1960 Chevy convertible with the 348 engine. That lasted until I bought a 1964 Dodge Polara with the 413. That lasted until I bought the 1969 Chrager R/T with the 425HP/440 with an automatic. I currently have a 74 F100 with the 390GT engine sitting in it

and a 1989 LSC sitting next to it with a roller engine that'll spank most Mustangs and Cameros. Given enough room, I've gone around turbo Porsches with it. There's also this one sitting in storage that I get out occasionally:

A numbers correct concours certified 1966 Mustang GT with the 289 HIPO, T4 tranny, 3:50 T-Lok. It has all of the GT options, Pony interior, Rally pack, has the Wonder Bar radio and even the Kleenex dispenser in the dash. It carries the Shelby options of 4 wheel disc brakes, Shelby ceramic headers, tower brace, Shelby exhaust, and has won every show I've ever put it in which includes the Texas show in Dallas. The car is basically as it came off of the showroom floor.
When it comes to cars, I've been very fortunate to own some of the most incredible cars ever to hit the roads. It's been quite a ride. A couple I didn't mention was an Excaliber that I owned for 2 months and got offered more than the clown should have paid for it. I also owned a Pantera with the 427 Side Oiler with 6 deuces that would out run daylight. I had it 3 weeks and decided it was either going to get me killed or severely hurt. I had a 1959 Jeep JC170 that I cut 33" out of the bed of the truck. It would only run 45 mph wide open but it's also do that going straight up. I still have a 59 Willys wagon and a 36 International pickup down home. Neither run but are in real good shape and would run if I spent the day on them. I just don't have the time to drive them.

1967 Corvette Stingray, 327/325 HP motor, four speed tranny, fire engine red, black interior. no A/C.  The speedometer had 160 on it and it would do all of that.  Bought it in 1975 for $2500.00 and sold it in 1978 for $4000.00 to pay the hospital for the birth of my first son.  Would not trade my son for anything but sure wish I had that car back.  Today the car is worth about twenty times what I sold it for.

Mine has to be the red 1997 Mazda Miata I had a few years ago.  Great little performer on the straightaway..and woulkd leave most hot iron easily in the "twisties"..of which we have plenty here.
Runnerups would have to be the 2 Suzuki Samurais or my 1950 VW split window I drove in Germany...complete with "idiot sticks" and blumenvasen.

MY Dad gave me $2800.00 in 1969 to go buy whatever car I wanted. After three days of intensive search I put $800 with it and bought a brand new 69 Torino GT off the show room floor, with a 351 cleveland engine that ate 289 mustangs for breakfast. Never put anything in that car but Gasoline and oil, and an 8 track tape player and speakers.  ::)   Wish I still had it.

I really liked my Suzuki Samurai's, 7.5" lift kits, 37X12.50X15 wheels and tires.  I also like my mazda Miata's, I own two a 94 and a 2001.  My 1949 MG,TC was pretty cool too, with it's right hand drive, huge steering wheel, wire wheels, and tiny little boot with leather straps holding it closed.  It got stolen, recovered, stolen again, recovered again.  I decided it was too high a risk car for theft and sold it.  Got a little Bug Eyed Austin Healey Sprite.  It got wrecked by a buddy.

But the coolest car I ever owned was a 1956 Corvette.  It was given to me, by a co-worker.  The engine was blown, the upholstery had been torn up by mice and chickens.  I towed it to the base auto hobby shop on a trailer.  During the next 6 months it got a new Chevy 283, with tri-power.  Reupholstered in white naugrahyde, and the dash was refinished.  Painted it Coppertone Metal Flake, with seven coats of laquar.

That was the most beautiful car I ever owned.  I got rear ended at a stop sign by a bunch of painters.  Totaled the car.

A good friend of mine had a 70 Challenger with the 340 6pack. He had the engine built, and it was an awesome car. He kept it for a good many years, but was forced to sell it due to wife and kids.

I feel left out. Never owned a car. Pick-ups, vans and motorcycles. Now, my dad had, and learned to drive in, a 1969 Grand Prix, and next came a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado. If I had to pick, I guess it would be the Caddy. Back seat in the Caddy had more room, ;) , if ya know what I mean. gypsyman

My first car: '69 Fairlane fastback  with a 302 BOSS. Cream with black vinyl roof. Or, a bit later I had a '67 Galaxie 500 with a 390, 4 BBL, 3/4 cam, dual exhaust w/glass packs--- it got maybe 8 miles per gallon unles you leaned on it.  The car I WISH I'd bought belonged to a neighbor: '58 Edsel Villager--- ugly as sin; he wanted $250 for it and I laughed. It would go for considerably more nowadays...

Can think of two. In 1974 I bought a 1970 Pontiac "J Model" Grand Prix. 455 ci and a 3 speed manual transmission with a factory Hurst floor shifter. In 1982 I bought a 1967 Ford Galaxy that someone had put a 351 Cleveland 4 barrel engine and a 4 speed manual tranny. Hurst shifter again in this one too. Both of these rides were easy on the eyes and bad to the bone hotrods.

I am torn between a 1954 Ford 2 door station wagon, or a 1964 Ford Fairlane 2 door hard top. Since I am a Ford man, I am very fond of the Cyclone and the Fairlane fast back!

1960 New Yorker.....413 w/ push button tranny( though that was neat) 1966 New Yorker with 440(heavy but fast), 1965 Ford Fairlane w/ 289.....just fun, and my 70 GMC P/U After I shoehorned a 68 HP 427 into it.....couldn't keep the tire from breaking loose.
