Finally got my .585 Hubel Express (Update)
« on: May 10, 2013, 04:07:08 AM »
Just picked up my new toy .585 Hubel Express build on an SB2 frame it has a 30 inch Pac-Nor barrel.  Just have to buy a new press that will handle the 1" dies.  Can't wait to try it out should make a good pig gun 650gr bullet at 2400-2500fps is the starting load, don't think I'll go up from there. :)

hwhit,

If you decide to shoot this gun off-hand please video and put it on U tube. ;)

I guess a weight of 14 pounds for your gun and with a 650g bullet @ 2500 fps and 180g of powder you have about 125 lb ft of recoil. ;D

Any idea what chamber pressure this cartridge will generate?

I'm not sure of the pressure of the starting load of 165gr RE25 for 2400 fps, but the max load for a bolt action is a 650 at 2850 and 60k psi.  I bought the gun from Ed hubel and he provided load info.  Will try to post pics later today.

Is that a liner barrel inside of a 10ga shotgun barrel on a 10ga SB2 frame?

If it is like double a 10ga. that should be like shooting both barrels of a 10ga. double at the same time  :o .
An old 12ga. double 2 3/4" doubled on me once and that was ENOUGH, yes sir, quite enough.

Ed's 60kpsi load is with a different powder in a 32" bolt gun as shown on Ammoguide and in his long running 12gaFH saga, the RL25 load runs less than 40kpsi at 2333fps in the 30" barrel according to QL. The 60kpsi load would provide almost 19000 lbs breech thrust in the H&R which is waaaay too much for the platform.
I'll stick with my 50-140 aka 500NE on an SB2 rifle frame and 570gr solids at 2219fps, I could have gone further, but the recoil was getting to be too much from the bench.

A 200 lb Handi-Holic spies an 4000 lb elephant and raises his 585 Hubble Express and pulls the trigger.   Who ever gets up first is declared the winner, and the spoils of the other is divided according to the laws of the jungle.

In a bolt gun it's overkill... in a Handi rifle it's foolish. Hang it on the wall now before it blows off some of your body parts.

If we consider any of the 'big-bores' with LOTS of cartridge capability we all know a lessor load that still has all that bullet inertia will do just fine. It wont be a 'flat shooter' anyway.
Id load a couple up to about 1400fps and to just see where Im at, then boost 'em from there a 100fps at a time, or so, until I hit short of 'pain & suffering'. I know I wouldnt have to go far.......maybe even have to back up (Oh, it'll make ya 'back up' alright, son!).

Please forgive my ignorance on this but I thought the powers at be decided that anything over .50 cal was a destructive device and therefor banned for us peasants..  Am I wrong about this or is there some loophole that let's rifles like this through?

I know the 12g from hell is still a shotgun and that's why it's OK...

Shot my .585 Hubel Express today.
« Reply #28 on: May 13, 2013, 05:25:22 PM »
Well I was finally able to get out to shoot my .585 Hubel Express. I must admit I was alittle nervous about it because the largest rifle I have shot up until today was my .375 H&H. I really had no idea of what to expect from an 11.5 lbs H&R single shot with a 650 gr Woodleigh at 2400 fps. I reviewed the old post on the proper way to shoot heavy kicking rifle, and I have to say It was nowhere near as bad as I expected, I am hooked now. I am taking it in to have it drilled and tapped for a red dot sight then plan on thinning out some pigs.
