It's not so much a grudge as it is a general dislike of Yankees.  To a southerner, a yankee is a fast-talking, rude, self-centered, all knowing critter who can' stay home.  He absolutely must invade the south over and over again.  He doesn't care that he's not wanted because he doesn't care about anyone but his own self-righteous self.  Florida is way the heck south, but it's crammed full of hateful Yankees.  I wish we could have another civil war just to divide the nation like in Korea and the northerners would have to stay they heck out of the south.

How many more 100 of Thousand    dead?  You scare me !!

BTW. Having traveled throughout the USA over the past several decades I don't recall meeting any or perhaps very few of so called fast talking crude and rude individuals.  I surely can't say that for some posters here, even from the South.

I don't think you could gather up enough southerner's to quit sipping their sweet tea to make a real effort of it...  They move so dag-gone slow it wouldn't be very sporting anyway.  ;)

The main reason Yankees keep coming south is the warm weather. The next reason is that look at all those good ole boys as easy pickings. It is like a fox finding his way into the henhouse.
The South was impoverished for more than a century after the War because of its stiff necked stupidity.  The best thing that ever happened to the South was the Civil Rights Act that forced the South to join the 20th century and create some kind of civil normalcy and with it investment and jobs. It helped strip control of southern society and politics from the  grasps of multiple generations  of die hard haters. The War may have destroyed the South but it was Southerners that prevented its recovery.

Anybody alive today that still carries a grudge needs some serious reality reassessment. It's impossible that you would remember it, so all you have are tales told by disgruntled losers. THAT'S what you believe in, and insist on perpetuating.

Or it could be we remember the union car makers from the North that sold us really poorly build cars and trucks back in the 60's - 90's . Or the federal taxes used to bail out worthless programs established in northern cities when they failed to control their budgets. Or maybe we get tired of the snow birds ( you do know what they are right ? ). Or the anal northern voters wanting gun control . The list goes on but don't believe it is a 150 year old grudge .

The grudge is not only held by southerners.

There is a particular town in Virginia located between me and SHOOTALL.  Some of the outlying population is black.  I was once there and had occasion to talk with the local police department.  I learned they have a Wal-Mart in town that must close each day at dusk, because the black population of that area descend on it like bats after dark.  Loss prevention is impossible.  When arrests are made, the perpetrators invariably state that stealing from white folks is okay because they once held blacks as slaves, so the descendants of those slaves are entitled to take what they please.

Do they really feel that way, or is that simply their internal reasoning?  I don't hold a grudge against northerners because of the war, I simply want them to go somewhere else.  Take a trip anywhere you want within our nation.  You'll find both southerners and northerners.  They live and work everywhere and you are bound to have occasion to deal with them, whether it be a cashier, and airline ticket seller, or a person on the street.  Keep a tally of how many times you were given short answers or were treated rudely.  100% of the rudeness will have come from a person from the north.  It's just a built-in condition.  "I'm more important, I'm smarter, I'm faster, I am better."

Lots of sin is "built in."  People's appetite for the wrong thing is in our nature.  We have to resist it.  Yankees don't.  It's like they can't help themselves.  It's like a cultural thing.  But, like any sin, it can be conquered.  To hurt someone's feelings, is sinful.  Not realizing that you are doing so, is no excuse.  Yankees should be careful to be polite, but they just won't do it.  That's not holding a grudge about the war, but it makes me wish I'd lived during that time so I could have taught a few of them to be polite.

So, now I ask all you "south will rise again" types: Why are you surprised that many black people carry a grudge because of slavery? The last civil rights movement was only about 50 years ago--- much more recent than the civil war. And yet, they are supposed to just drop that and move on, while you get to cherish your grudge like a lost child? What's THAT all about?

    In a nutshell:

    1.  The North was unable to win the War until Grant and Sherman intentionally adopted the strategy of attacking, burning, looting and murdering civilian homes, farms and personnel.  Under the laws of both then  and now, these were actually War crimes, punishable by death.   At Sherman's instruction, Sheridan (with Custer's help) started at the northernmost top of the Shenandoah Valley, and traveled down it for 200 miles, cutting a 25 mile wide swath, burning, looting and killing everything in his path, including houses, farms, cattle, and crops.   (He laughed about it later, saying that if a crow flew over the Valley, he would have to bring his own lunch, because his troops had destroyed absolutely everything.)    Sherman, in turn, performed his march to the sea, cutting a 50 mile wide swath, for 200 miles or more, across East Tennessee and Georgia, again burning, looting, pillaging and butchering every civilian target in his path.   Of course, after the War, there were no trials or accountability for this.  They were regarded as heroes by the North, and were later sent to Kansas and other parts of the West to employ the same strategy for exterminating the Indian tribes.

Not since the Revolutionary War had any people in the America been subjected to this type of barbarism.

  2.  For more than a decade after the War, the entire South was forcefully occupied by Federal Troops.  Most people today in the North don't even know this.  There was virtually martial law in the South for all of that time, and white male ex-Confederates were a favorite target.

  3.   My father is 89 years old, and still a practicing doctor.  He recalls seeing as a child the very old Confederate War veterans limping in parades in Richmond.  The farm were he was born, still held in our family, outside of Richmond (near Short Pump, Virginia) was occupied by Federal Cavalry during the War.  His grandfather constantly told him about the atrocities, and he passed the stories along to us as children.

  4.  And finally, due to cultural differences, most Northerners, particularly the tens of millions of them from urban New York and New Jersey, are rude, obnoxious, tasteless people, who continually uphold an "air of superiority" in discussing and dealing with the South, despite the fact that their own cities are stinking sewers.  Moreover, they appear to have no appreciation or understanding of the outdoors, firearms or hunting.  (Their idea of an outdoor experience is putting on an NBA Jersey and going to a game at Madison Square Gardens.)

   5.  Happily, the South now has its revenge.  The industrialized cities of the North are now bankrupt and rotting, from Ithaca, to Pittsburgh, to Gary, to Detroit.  The vast majority of all new auto and other manufacturing companies are now built in the South, particularly the Mid-South (Tennessee, Arkansas, northern Mississippi).  Duke University has now surpassed Harvard as the penultimate research medical center in the U.S., including new medical discoveries.  The vast majority of population and building growth in the last 25 years has been in the South, particularly the Sunbelt, as more and more companies have discovered how badly the North (it's people, climate, taxes, and cities) really suck.

   Any other questions?  :-)

You don't get it do you. The Civil rights movement has caused more Blacks more trouble than it has helped. They were given a fish instead of being taught to fish in many schools. Most I know wanted a fair chance not a hand out back then . Now many are dependent on the govt. And incase you missed it all Americans suffer because of it . Look at affirmative action.

Why???

The idiots come down here and pay our inflated prices on food, land, equipment and all the trinkets we make...We treat them the same as the government treated the Indians in the 1800s...Northerners are dependent on us...Look at the beaches on the Outer Banks, full of northerners...Spending all that money, trying to have a good time and forget where they came from...Then they pack up and head back north, and we are the richer for it... ;)

Actually "we" can't be held responsible for what happened before 1750 or since 1862 thats 112 years and if it were to researched you'd find that before 1750 there were more white slaves in the country.  But if 4hunerd years makes you feel better and furthurs your cheesy argument so be it! It certainly makes "our " feelings stronger, besides the question was why does the south hold a 150 year old grudge. It may be just because of folk like you!  ;)  "you gonna draw those pistols or just whistle DIXIE?"  :-*

Chung,

I've got a real news flash for you, since you really seem to be clueless about certain things.

I lived my entire life in the South, including 30 years living and working in Memphis, Tennessee, a city with a 55% black population, black mayor, city counsel and police force.  There is nothing whatsoever that you may be able to tell me about working with, living with or understanding black people that I don't already know.

The majority of them hold no grudge whatsoever against or regarding slavery.  In fact, they are embarrassed by the topic and simply want to move on themselves.  The vast majority of them who live in the South love the South and would never want to move.  Clearly, if they wanted to, they could all load up in their cars and move to your beloved North.

But here's the kicker, those that hate white people hate ALL white people, both North and South.  Their hatred has nothing whatsoever to do with slavery in the South 150 years ago, or the Civil War, or the Civil Rights Movement.  They will tell you that.  And those that hate whites really really hate Asians as well!

So if you somehow believe that racial hatred by blacks in America is limited to the South, or the prior institution of slavery, you are wrong.

Chung ole buddy, how old were you and where were you in the 1960s?   Huge race riots, looting and burning of cities occurred throughout the North, in places like New York, Chicago, Gary, and Detroit.  In those very places where you Northerners think that they love you.  And by the way, did you know that in 1863, when Lincoln initiated the very first military draft in America, the good white people of New York City were so pissed off that they rioted, looted and burned for three days, hunting down black people and hanging them from lamp posts?  Federal troops had to be called in by Lincoln to restore order.

Or the federal taxes used to bail out worthless programs established in northern cities when they failed to control their budgets. ............. The list goes on but don't believe it is a 150 year old grudge .

Just an FYI ,
More southern states receive more in federal aid than northern states.
Northern states in general are doner states ie: contribute more and receive the least back.

New Jersey ranks up in the top 3 for giving the most and receiving back the least in federal $$$$.
You would think some would remember this next time disaster strikes and they want to yank NJ around for 70 something days in winter cold.

HMM.. Given that I wonder why northern states don't carry the same grudge toward the south you know with the north having to carry the majority of the tax burden weight in this country , and fed aid assistance and receiving so little back.

Scooterd,

That is an interesting statistic.  As for federal disaster relief (aid), I believe you are probably correct.  In the past two decades far more natural disasters have happened in the deep South than in other places. (Though New Jersey is about to catch up due to the recent hurricane.)

But as far as gross federal dollars spent, I am highly doubtful.  Consider federal highway funds.  No way that more dollars are spent in say Mississippi than in the States of New York or New Jersey.  Federal research grants?   Doubtful.  There are probably three times as many universities in the North than in the South.  Gross federal welfare dollars or aid to dependent children?  There are probably more poor people in New York City and its surrounding boroughs than in many Southern States as a whole.

Incidently, BTW,,,there's plenty of mountains in Texas, around and south of Alpine,,,the southern Rockies leading into Mexico.  Emery Peak, second highest in Tex is about 7500feet overlooking the Rio Grande and Chiuahua Desert.,,,,nice and gritty country if you like mucho seco. Not too much Johnny Law down there either.
.
....TM7

I agree, I go over a pass of over 1 mile high almost daily.  Also, down in the Big Bend area you will see plenty of people over heated trying to make it up the grade to Chisos Basin.  I had to take my concretes trucks up dry because the couldn't handle the load wet. We are at the Southern tip of the Rockies.......doesn't compare to Wolf Creek or Capitan, but it is definately a mountain.
