Guess I can't put that jacket away yet for mowing. Supposed to get frost the next two nights.

I just looked up some of the lowest recorded temps in this area, and 5 of the lowest 10 ever, were recorded in the last 20 years, when we are supposed to be melting away. The 10 hottest temps ever recorded in this area, only 2 have been in the last 20 years, and both of those dates were in the summer of 1988. So not since 1988 have we recorded a top 10 record temp, when we are supposed to be melting away.
I also looked up the 15 hottest years and 11 of them were recorded 1930 or earlier, with many of those 11 in the late 1800's.
Looked up the 24 coldest summers on record and 17 of them happened since 1960. You would think with all this global warming we been hearing about these records would be reversed.
From what I understand this is probably just one of the basic tenets of global warming. I guess just like frost at the end of May is a basic tenet of global warming.
Maybe the reason they changed the name to climate change is so, what ever way the mercury flows they can say  "See we told you this was going to happen".
I really don't care if those type of people believe this garbage, but whats so wrong about it is they want everyone to believe it, and want to rid us of our atmosphere polluting gasoline powered lawn mowers, then there won't be any more complaining about mowing with winter jackets on.
I did hear the greenies are moving on to battery mowers now since the volt was a money vacuum, and failure.

Climate science is an amalgam of various scientific disciplines including geology, physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology. Your decision to cherry pick the evidence that suits your preconcieved notions is your own. The body of science also supports evolution something you also rail against. For some there is no hope.  ;)

Sorry 2B the data I looked up was from the national weather service, and its very accurate. It wasn't cherry picked from a right wing website. So I see we can't draw any conclusions if information is from anywhere else except from one of the leftist, environmental web sites like Grist, which appears you have fallen in love with.
Your climate science you speak of is nothing but a freaking religion. Like I said before, you have been very well indoctrinated into this religion.

I don't even agree with you on the point that there is no hope for some. There is hope for every human on earth. All you have to do is open the door to Jesus Christ and there will be all the hope anyone ever needs.

A record low, high temp of 51 was set today in Pittsburgh area for this date. The most recent coldest low temp high was set in 1877 at 52 degrees. The next two nights are expected to set record lows. Had to make covers for 80 pepper, tomato, and cabbage plants. Maybe we will be able to put the coats and winter apparel away in June sometime.

It's been hovering in the 30s all day today..I usually plant garden on Memorial day.  This year I may be late due to cool weather , plus I have Memorial Day speeches to deliver in two different places..

I share a big garden with my parents, and we thought the frost a couple of weeks ago would be the last, so we planted. Now we have to cover. We generally do wait until the end of May, but we had some nice weather.

Thanks, and God bless, to you, and all for your service. Good luck with your speeches, wish I could hear them. Speaking in front of people was one trait I was never blessed with, but something I always wished I could do.

Obviously, there are some people who do not understand the difference between  weather and climate.
Let’s start with the dictionary definitions:

Weather: the state of the atmosphere with respect to wind,  temperature, cloudiness, moisture, pressure, etc.

Climate: the composite or generally prevailing weather  conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation,  sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of  years.

In short, weather is a data point. Climate is a collection of data.

You can think of it like the economy. I can tell you that the Dow is up  112.61 as I write this, at 9,284.22. This is the weather (partly sunny, 84 F).  But it doesn’t tell you anything useful about the economy as the whole (like the  weather conditions don’t tell you anything useful about climate). A graph of the  Dow over the last year, showing a terrifying decline followed by a steady rise,  begins to tell the story of the last year. But to get a true picture of the  economy, we’ll need to look at lots of other bits of data, like consumer  confidence, unemployment rates and durable goods orders. It’s complicated, messy  and hard to understand. That’s climate.

Now, if you make changes to the country’s economic situation, for example, by  raising taxes, that is going to have some effect on the economy as a whole.  Economists will crunch the numbers and come out with predictions. They won’t all  be the same, but they will probably trend toward some particular end.

Adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere is akin to raising taxes. We’ve  changed the climate situation. And while these climate models—which are far  simpler than economic models and more certain—may not agree on the specifics,  the general trend is that temperatures are going to rise.

And they have been rising. And more than that, we can already see the effects  of that rise. Just read the magazine: We’ve featured melting  glaciers, melting  permafrost and changes in plant and animal distributions in  the Andes and, closer to home, the  Northeast, to name a few.

So please don’t write to us to say that we’re neglecting the latest weather  superlative. We’re not. We just have our eyes on the bigger picture—climate.

DDZ;
What varieties of tomatoes do you plant?  I have a thing for tomatoes, and usually have to start from seed because my preferred varieties are not usually found already started.  I like low-acid varieties, so usually plant plenty of orange to yellow types, although I have red ones also.
I ran into a beauty just last year, so I'm going with them again.  They are called German orange Strawberry, and they are strawberry or heart shaped and big as beefsteaks, at least mine were.  Flavor is fantastic (IMO) and they are prolific.  I got them from Pinetree seeds:  https://www.superseeds.com/products.php?cat=132

IG: We used to plant mostly all Rutgers. It was an old variety, and had good flavor, and most of all it was a good tomato for making juice. My mom always canned over a 100 quart of tomato juice, and still does. Rutgers is one of the best for that. I think it was the tomato Campbells used for making their soup. They were a bit susceptible to different disease and blight so a number of years ago we switched to Big Boy and super sonic. Both varieties make a nice red tomato, give good yield, have lots of flavor, and are still good canning tomatoes.
When the tomatoes get ripe, I think I live on tomatoes. Bacon and tomato on toast is one of my favorite. I'm just as happy with a tomato and a salt shaker.

For lower acid tomatoes that local businesses might have in plants, you could look for some of the hybrid variety. I think the Big Girl, Beefmaster, and Big Early hybrids are a lower acid tomato. We do just buy our plants from local businesses.

We ended up not getting the frost last night. It was close though, 34 degrees. I think tonight might be a little colder, because it has cleared with no wind.

One variety I planted for years and still would if I didn't have so many varieties already going, is the original Goliath, a big, red, hearty tomato with much resistance.  I like the Indeterminate varieties (spread out not bush type).  One low acid type often found as plants in nurseries is Lemon Boy, about the color of a lemon..but big and spherecal.
If we go any further , we should go to the garden section !  ;) ;D

Oh, according to Fox News, the Catskills and Adirondaks got SNOW last night.

you guys are having record lows, high/lows and down here in Phoenix were have been over 100F for about two weeks. I saw 102F yesterday. It is not unheard of to be this high this early but it is unusual.

It may not be 'if you don't like the weather wait a minute' but you sure can find what you like somewhere in this country.

I guess people become accustomed to the temps they live in. I have always said I don't know how you people stand the heat living in the south. I know when it gets 90 here, I hate it. I would trade it any day for 30. So in the summer I'll take all the record low highs we can get. I've never been to the south west where there is heat, but no humidity. Really couldn't imagine living in the south east where you get 100 degrees with lots of humidity. I always hear people in this area say "Id like to move to Florida, where its warm" For me I would move north before south.

We had frost last night also.

I think the reason the lefties trumpet global warming is because they see it as a way to extract more money from businesses, and our pockets to prop up all their little socialist programs. Another reason is, Liberals just love to tell everyone else how to live. With the man made global warming scam the hope is to tell us how to live by rule of law. Wonder why none of the biggest blow hards that trumpet global warming don't set an example, and rid themselves of their 10,000 + sq ft. homes, jets, yachts, and their big gas guzzling cars? Oh I forgot, the rich Liberals job is just to blow smoke up our butts, and tell the rest of us how to live.

Yeah...Global warming...
You Warmists..will have to go back and dig up your compadres from the 70s..and start the Chicken Little drumbeat concerning "Global Cooling"..  The problem is, with thinking people, you have already blown your credibility  Actually, I believe many of the Warmists have already caught on..but they are so stubborn and agenda driven, that they refuse to admit they have been so very wrong!

No matter how many times it is refuted the flat earthers keep bringing up the 70's ice age predictions!  Forty years to find real scientific evidence to refute climate change and this is the best they can do.  :o  What's next, blaming volcanoes?

The weather has been changing and doing weird things longer than we have been alive, but since I've been alive is about all I have to go by personally. Here in Michigan we had some weird weather patterns in the 60's and 70's, tornado's were rated and 4's and 5's back then too and a lot of them. So when I was younger the summers seemed really hot, the winters had so much snow nobody could move, lately summers are cooler overall with the exception of last summer, this year is really cool and we have not seen nearly as powerful tornado's, but that is here in Michigan. I'm sure every state has it's own deal in weather patterns the last few decades. What causes it? Does it really matter? It's not like our government could change anything, all they can do is tax us all with no other changes, they have no power to change the weather period, and never will, most likely if they did have this power they would screw it up like everything else they touch.
Global warming sounds like a tax and regulations to me, sorry but that's the way it sounds to me. I obviously have good reason to think this using my past experience, just sayin. Whichever way the global warming debate goes, if it means emptying my wallet with taxes or regulating my burning wood in the winter for more heat, count me out. I'm on the don't tax me no more side of this.

In the late 90s I was in Detroit. The temp. was 104F with 98% humidity. Just stepping outside had you soaked in sweat in a matter of seconds. I never liked it hot but I will trade 110F at 20% humidity any day for the outrageous humidity surrounding the Great Lakes. Being right on the lake shore or on the St. Clair River was always a pleasure but it did not happen often enough to make up for the day-to-day drag.

Thanks for pointing that out. You're absolutely correct on the name calling. Henceforth I will no longer stoop to your level.

The 4 Species of Climate-Change Denial:

Too many people remain unpersuaded by the science of climate change. Isaac Asimov was right when he said “the saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.” But markets apparently are gathering climate change wisdom. There is a growing economic as well as scientific consensus.

Working under the assumption that climate change is inevitable, they’re investing in businesses that will profit as the planet gets hotter. (The World Bank says the earth could warm by 4C by the end of the century.) Their strategies include buying water treatment companies, brokering deals for Australian farmland, and backing a startup that has engineered a mosquito to fight dengue, a disease that’s spreading as the mercury climbs.
Let’s just hope those investors are underestimating our capacity to gather wisdom based on scientific knowledge. Although, based on the 4 species of response I encountered, that just might be an empty hope. Here are the 4 species:
1. Lost in the scientific weeds
They grab a fact, a factoid, or an isolated data point consistent with their group identity and then categorically assert that this scientifically proves—it absolutely proves!—that human-caused climate is the greatest hoax ever perpetuated. They ignore all those pesky peer reviews and concerns with methodological rigor. They know best. I mean, really, why bother with the actual science with which you,  your group, and your political leaders disagree?
2. Trashing scientists
They move up a level of abstraction. Instead of trashing the science they trash the community of scientists. Consensus is irrelevant because scientists are weak, craven, and dishonest. For them, scientists are just a bunch of liars and cheats who will say anything to get a grant. This group cites evidence of scientific wrongdoing that never happened and ignores the results of any contrary investigation.
3. Backwards policy prescriptions
This species requires both significant imagination and a radical suspension of logic. They start by pointing to dire, horrific, civilization altering consequences of policies that take climate-change seriously. And then, with a startling display of illogic, turn around to say that because the policy is unacceptable all this talk about climate-change must be nothing more than total crap.
4. Name calling
Don’t mean to shock you but there are people who think name calling moves things forward. Among other things, I was accused of huffing glue and of being a pagan believer in “ecotheism.” Let me assure you that neither is true. The former would unacceptably interfere with running and biking while the latter implies a religious commitment beyond the grasp of my secular soul.

Come on dude, you've already admitted CO2 levels are rising and referenced articles that demonstrate temperatures are rising at unprecedented rates. You're only one step away from being all green and fuzzy! Where's the CO2 coming from?

In any case, the  advantages of climate change are far over shadowed by the detrimental consequences.

Its been 102 here for a week now. But at night it gets down to 40. Sorry 2B that's about normal
for a desert at this altitude its always been this way.
But it only feels like its in the high 80s because we have low humidity going for us.
If its going to be hot give me the dry heat any day. Nothing has changed we only had a late summer.
And its happening like that all over the world this year.
