Biggest cartridge to shoot with survivor stock

I am planning on adding a spare barrel or two(or three, or more.... so hard to choose) for my .308 survivor  at some point in the future, and I was just wondering, what do you folks feel would be the biggest cartridge that would still be comfortable to shoot from a handi with a survivor stock? I like the feel of the survivor stock, so I will be keeping that, but considering it's weight and lack of any padding on the survivor stock, I realize it might not be well suited for some of the heavier recoiling cartridges.  While I am not horribly recoil sensitive, I also don't see the point in abusing my shoulder unnecessarily.
Any thoughts?

Hello -Even if you go with a bigger caliber or cartridge you can always go with a lighter bullet and if you ever do swap out the stock then you could go with some heavier bullets or heavier kicking charges.  I think the 30-06 shoots nice with 125 gr bullets but I wouldnt go 180 gr bullets without a recoil pad....  Just me, but depending on if you reload or not you can make any caliber a lighter kicker for the off season and resight with heavier loads just before season if you need them.
Even the 45-70 can be a fun plinker or an elephant gun depending on how it gets loaded.
I know it isn't the answer you were looking for but there are variables.   thejanitor

If you really like the Survivor stock(lots don't) you can always add a large Limbsaver recoil pad as others have.  ;)

You're already shooting a .308.  While it's not an nasty kicker, there are only a few Handi's that kick more and lots that kick less.  Don't sweat it.  Get the barrel(s) you want and go from there.  If you don't like the recoil, do as Tim said and get the Limbsaver.  You can get a slip-on to remove when shooting the lighter loads and put back on with the heavier.  It ain't rocket science.

You know, myself and lots of others here have found it best to set up each barrel on it's own dedicated, frame, scope, stock set and recoil pad as a complete rifle.  It takes the guesswork out of it and gets optimum performance and it is ready to go when you are.  It costs a bit more, but is worth it in the long run.  It's not necessary to do overnight.  I've been at it for about six years and am still refining things.

Ive got a 18 inch cut down 45-70 on my survivor stock.  Managable recoil.

I'm one of those who did not like the survivor stock... Even with the .308 I think that you would be more comfortable with a recoil pad... Once the pad is on, you can shoot whatever you want.

I kinda thought that the recoil with my Survivor was very light. Barely noticeable, really. A real pleasure to shoot.

If it is the feel you like, not the storage, look at the Mark 6 stock also by Choate.  It has the same grip, but with a recoil pad.
