Got my wheels!!
« on: May 14, 2013, 12:31:25 PM »
Friend bored put the center to fit the axle. Now, some nice weather coming so maybe can do some finishing and painting. Then just some metal work to complete the Blomefield 3PDR Garrison Cannon.

Best Regards!

Mike,
You're doing a fine job on the carriage; but you don't plan on firing that gun, do you?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

No, this one will be for 'display purposes' only. Surprisingly however, it is clear to the breech and the breech itself looks nice and clean. As my son says, "Now that you have one for show, you need one to fire."

I still haven't lifted the tube up to see if there is anything on the underside. Have ordered some iron thimbles to go over the ends on the axle and butt up against the iron wheels. Course about half of what you see, of the turned axle, will be removed.  Will then paint the carriage a Battleship Gray with black for the fittings. You may know about it on the site, but I found an awesome place for hardware...

I've been taking pics all along the process, with a few months delay duting the winter, so will have a record of the 'reconstruction' since the day the cannon arrived.

Thanks for looking!

Great work so far...

You really should do some weathering to the carriage to match the aging of the barrel. Looking forward to some more pictures ;)

Yup..., right on. It will look pretty strange with the worn tube and a spanking, like new carriage. The wheels won't need it other than roughing up the new paint. I figure they are quite old as it is. They came from the Hersey Chocolate Factory auction after they shipped the business to Mexico.... I mean it had only been there since 1894... >:(

Hasn't tasted the same since.....

Any hints on aging the carriage?

Thanks ZULU. Very impressive! And, gave me an idea as you mentioned your wife was involved. Mine is an artist of sorts, though she's never painted a cannon, and to be frank, hasn't expressed a great deal of interest in my 'iron accumulations!' However, I'll bet she could do a proper aging if somehow coerced into it.

Hmmmmm...... after 44 years of marriage I'll have to think deeply on what might work.  ::)

Thanks for the response Mike, I'm glad that you don't intend to fire the gun. It certainly looks like your barrel and carriage are well on the way to becoming one fine display rig.
