1" or 3/4" Handle what is better.
« on: May 14, 2013, 04:10:36 PM »
I need some help deciding which handle looks better. Im looking forward to surprising all my family with one for Christmas. I been torn between the two and cant decide which looks better. 1" or 3/4" Please help me decide.
Ive found it hard to burn all the powder in this 1.25" bore when using 600 grains of 3F. Ive tried different wadding and it always seems to rain back down. Im thinking it has to do with the bore depth only being 6.5" to 7" Could a deeper bore and longer barrel burn all that powder? Thanks.
1"

3/4"

Try cutting back to one ounce of powder and an ounce of flour on top of it.

No one asked about this aspect, but this is "just me" needing to comment.  Personally I think the handles are too "busy" as one of my early-years school teachers would say.  I think they detract from the nice design of the barrels.  Detract, fight, conflict, y'know what I mean.  The old mugs have plain handles and often fancier barrels, maybe I'm too used to that.  You could photoshop-on some plainer handle designs and see if it looks better to you or not.

Thanks CannonMn. I agree with you and am glad you said that. Some times I look at the ball handle and think that same thing. ITs to busy. I have to get back to what I wanted to do and that's stay close to historically correct. I have to use Rectangular Key stock and I have to make an S handle. That's what I think I need to do.

I tried out the 1ounce of 3F and the flour. IT worked better than any combo of powder and wadding I tried yet. I never used flour before. This was perfect. It took even less powder to get the same boom. It might have been even louder than 800 grains and foil wadding!

"Wasn't that much of a smoke cloud ..."

Quite true as the powder is what produces the smoke.  If smoke (as opposed to boom) is what you really want, you will need to burn more powder.  The flour allows you to get a good boom but use less of the expensive powder.  Entirely your choice.
