French Bronze Cannon Barrel ca. 1816-1820. ???
« on: May 16, 2013, 03:32:03 AM »
I wonder what it is that informs someone that this barrel was cast around 1816 to 1820?

One needs to research the Royal crest to determine which Kings Coat of Arms that is.

Neal Gutterman is a longtime gun dealer/shark.... he has been in the business at least 40 if not 50 years.... I would say that little cannon was made anywhere form the 1890's to the 1930's the moldings are all wrong the trunnions are wrong the whole thing really looks like someone once saw a fancy cannon  and tried to duplicate it from memory......
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

A good point!  The crown on the crest should mean a person of nobility.  However, the Coat of Arms is not a correct Royal.  Both English monarchs & French used fleur de lis...  I would not accept someone else's unverified claimed research.  At that bore size, it could be a swivel cannon or ceremonial use.

We in the antique arms business call these little, overly-long-trunnioned cannons "decorators."  They were made anytime from 1890's to the present.  Merchants saw a demand for all kinds of arms, armor, etc. that the noveau riche could hang on their walls, put on little pine carriages, etc. in their big homes to look like they were a part of the old money crowd.  Real cannons were too hard to find even then, when a great many were needed, and the fancier the better.  The latest ones I've seen had a pseudo-Spanish theme complete with COA, and snaky "rope"  designs on the barrel.  There have been some pictured on this site.
Please remember that term, "decorator," and use it when appropriate.

Kabar,
I believe that your assessment of this pastiche is right on the money.
